Norway has solution to this actually, stay at home parents can get their share of the public daycare subsidy as cash, that way parents are not pushed one way or the other. the problem of course is virtually no one on the center or right actually gives a shit about parents

Whenever the GAO puts out a report on school facilities it's an important day, there's precious few national reports. This one found that 1 in 5 schools had to cancel classes due to poor facilities, impacting 2 million students in 2024-25. www.gao.gov/products/gao...

It's difficult to grapple with the cost of material which hinders upgrades and fixes. But in NC it also is infuriating to see that if we had left our state education lottery percentage at 35% as it was required we could have had an additional 5 billion dollars in revenue for infrastructure.

This is the essential core of popularism. Things being exactly the way they are in the present is the only imaginable state of affairs, and that is the lens through which everything gets judged. I was a stay-at-home toddler dad recently, and the idea that this would offer nothing to me is CRAZY

In my ed reform course, I talk about its propensity for grift — structural encouragement to make huge promises about a glorious future and collect massive present financial and social rewards on that basis. Well-meaning reformers might look at the AI hype cycle and be like, oh shit, that’s us.

The thing about SaS's breathless innuendo about the evil publishing company pushing a flawed product, the cultish devotion to a set of scholars invested in a particular way of understanding education, and widespread underdelivering is — that’s just what ed reform looks like. For decades.

I love being at a place in my life and career where I can look at this panel of experts and be like (a) if you're finding points of consensus with these folks, you're looking at something quite real, and also (b) I know exactly who ranked "firing ineffective teachers" as a high-impact intervention.

I don't disagree. But, as I wrote back to these reporters, I am most optimistic about projects that respond to the expressed concerns of students and teachers. These are the people who spend 180 days inside schools each year, and they're the key actors in the process of teaching and learning. 1/n

This is 100% the disconnect I see — families, esp, but also staff, have big opinions about “the district,” and those carry real weight wrt enrollment, but those opinions are ALWAYS shaped primarily by their experience with THEIR SCHOOL. Resources, voice, quality on a daily basis — that’s the driver

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.
