The problem is that "while you weren't looking the tech industry was comprehensively taken over by a cult based around a piece of Harry Potter fanfic" is self-evidently an absolutely ridiculous claim that can't possibly have happened, which is a real problem given that it 100% did happen.

Well, I've pretty much finished my latest knitting project: a copy of the scarf Tom Baker wore in his last season of Doctor Who. It's basically unwearable but it was certainly a fun project. I'm thinking I might knit a shorter (and narrower) one that I can actually wear normally.
Me, standing in my garden, wearing a longish black coat and an absurdly long red, purple and orange scarf.A very long red, orange and purple scarf, hanging in my conservatory.A ridiculously long red, orange and purple scarf, stretched out on the floor of my lounge. I've folded it in two so it'll fit in the room.

The Law of the Internet says that every time you see this story, you have to share it. And here we are again.
THRASHED BY A LADY CYCLIST.
WHO IS NOTED FOR HER ATHLETIC POWERS.
[SUBJECT OF ILLUSTRATION.]
An extraordinary scene was witnessed on Saturday morning in Peel Lane, a thorough-tare connecting Little Hulton with Tyldesley, in which the principal participants were a young lady cyclist and a youth of nineteen or twenty. The lady was riding at a good pace, and when in a quiet part of the road the young man, who-had apparently been imbibing, stepped into the roadway, and addressing some insulting remarks to. the cyclist, made as if he intended pulling nei off the machine.
She immediately alighted
caught hold of the astonished youth, and gave him & sound thrashing, using her tists in scientific fashion, to the delight of several colliers who were passing.
The young man
made of and the list, who is believed to be a Bolton lady noted for her athletio powers, rode off towards Tyldesley.Picture of said scoundrel being thrashed by the lady cyclist, who is known for her athletic prowess. Several gentlemen stand in the background cheering her on.

When I was a student, for about 3 months in early 1998 I lived in a shared house that used to be a video store. It had metal shutters and a sign saying "Star Video", and the interior walls were basically plasterboard. It was grim and my housemates were frustratingly untidy, but the rent was cheap.

I mean, I see why the auto-categorisation feature in my shopping list app has done this, but goodness me. Really don't try this one at home, kids.
Screenshot from a shopping list app. It has categorised "Caustic soda" as "Beverages".

Caustic soda is in no sense whatsoever a beverage - it's a highly corrosive alkaline chemical used for (amongst other things) aggressively unblocking drains.

Never, ever attempt to drink or otherwise consume it.

Owl of Athena! 🦉❤️ The goddess’s sacred bird with helmet and weapons transformed into a tiny armed warrior! Red-figure ceramic vessel made in Athens around 2,400 years ago! 📷 Louvre Museum, Paris collections.louvre.fr/en/ark:/5335... #Archaeology
The Louvre image shows an ancient Athenian ceramic vessel decorated with an orangey-red coloured owl with weapons and helmet against a glossy black slip background. The owl’s details are defined in black. The owl stands facing right, with body in profile and head tilted slightly forwards and turned full-face towards the viewer. It has large circular eyes outlined in black, a small pointed v-shaped beak, and dense plumage represented by dots on the head, and rows of short black lines and dots on the broad wing at its side. It wears a helmet and has a human-like right arm holding a long spear horizontally at its side, and on the other side, at right, is a large round shield. The figure appears quite comic and endearing, at least to the modern eye.

The Louvre describes the vessel as an ‘oinochoe’, that is a wine jug with a single handle (looks like a cup to me!). The handle is not seen in the image. Dimensions: Height: 6.4 cm, Diameter 6 cm. Dated 425-375 BC. The vessel is displayed on a small black museum plinth against a light grey background.

Owl imagery on red-figure ceramic cups and jugs was extremely popular some 2,500 years ago and they were produced in large quantities in pottery workshops in Athens and beyond.

Dolly Partons IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Dear Imagination Library Graduate,

My, how time flies. It seems it was only yesterday when your family and friends read you your first story. You were just a baby. Now you're five years old and about to go to school. How exciting!
This may be your last book from my Imagination Library but you have to promise me you will keep on reading. If you go to your local public library you will find a great number of books just for kids your age. Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.
I hope you have a great time in school. I bet your school will even have a library where you can check out books. You and all of your friends are very special. There is no limit to what you can do or how far you can go.

Just remember the lessons my family taught me - dream big dreams; learn everything you can learn; and care for all those who care for you. You do all of these things and you can be anyone you want to be.

You are terrific, and remember...
I Will Always Love You,
Dolly

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry

EXPLORING VARIATION
The Museum has several collections of snails put together by scientists who studied inheritance and evolution. Arthur Stelfox (1883-1972) was interested in the ways that different shell patterns and colours are inherited. He bred snails of different varieties with one another over a period of sixty years. Collections like this are still used by scientists, who are trying to answer new questions.
