I bought Justin's book last year and loved it, so I bought it for my brother for Christmas and he loved it too. If you grew up with / are interested in 80s pop music, the trivia and the stories around it, you'll love it. Or if that describes a friend or relative - Christmas sorted :)

Not a film, but David Tennant's version of The Doctor, saying "quite right too" seemed to permanently set up shop in my go-to phrases about 20 years ago.

Starting a new picture and I thought I'd make this one of the ones where I insist on showing you it stage by stage. So:
A3 paper, mainly blank, but in the middle stands a picture frame, or at least the pencil outlines of one. There is an outer frame and a couple of borders. Nothing of note within the frame yet. But still - a picture within a picture, what Inception-style layers have I got planned, eh? Well, nothing planned actually, I just had a vague idea of drawing a picture of people gathered round a framed picture. Let's see what happens. Oh, and next to the pencil lines lays my trusty 1980s Ghostbusters pencil. I've explained before, but just in case you don't know and you're interested - I had some Ghostbusters stationary when I was about nine or ten and after a while I lost the pencil. A couple of years ago, my parents were making big changes to their living room and the pencil was found behind a cabinet. So it's become my go-to pencil and I like that it connects my art to my childhood.

I think if you get to a billion dollars, the rule should be that you then go back to zero and start again. So - either steer clear of it, or make sure you're prepared for a challenge.

Just added these to my website as I could do with some sales, it’s a nice toilet with a framed pic of a puffin, it’s Jude Bellingham being hunky in ink, it’s a pollarded willow tree, and it’s a house in Weymouth with an orangutan face. www.chloecumming.com
Toilet in lovely soft watercolour and pastel with rich green carpet Jude holding a ball in very lively ink , quite gestural An oil pastel stubby tree, observed from the real, blues and yellows and bold marks Front of a house with bay windows and blue skies, near Weymouth harbour , with ape face

New picture:
Ink drawing with pencil colours on yellow paper. No background. Everyone in this picture is looking at you. So: Furthest left, we have an old-ish woman. Her face sags a little, she has thick black-framed glasses and tall, pink hair, like a cloud on its side. Her arm is pink and gold striped and leads to her hand resting on her pet's neck. This arm and her head are the only bits of the woman drawn. The pet: a large, sort of feline creature. Head a bit like a cheetah, but stretched out at each side. Blue eyes. The head floats and there is a gap of about a foot before the cat's body starts. It has two front legs and then the body tapers away and curves down to a tiny point touching the ground. At this point, its tail curves into the air like a question mark. The cat is gold, yellow and blue striped - its tail is also these colours, but fading from one to the other. A hand rises up behind the cats head (it might be the woman's other hand actually) and hold aloft the rather stern looking head of a large, oldish man. Double chin. Dot eyes. Tuft of white hair. Pink paper crown from a cracker. What is presumably his body stands on the right of the picture. Smart pink suit, gold patterned waistcoat, pink and yellow tie. Out of the neck hole of the body / outfit rises a tree. Black, thin trunk, dividing into a few branches, holding up pink, candyfloss like clumps of leaves, which sort of mirrors the woman's tall hair. In the tree, two very small, silhouette owls with long legs stand. Glowing yellow eyes. A few birds can be seen in the sky too, in the time-honoured way of just drawing 'v' shapes.

Finished picture:
Everything as described in the previous post, but the women now have turquoise shaded skin and their similarly coloured shadows stretch across the floor (no floor or sky is visible as such, btw. Behind the women is simply white paper, with the ground implied by the shadows.)
Hanging around the women's heads are five planets, hanging on wires. There are also many stars dotted about. One of the women's hair buns has rings round it like two of the planets.

Drawing based on the 1966 Czech film Sedmikrasky (Daisies)
Ink drawing with pencil colours on pale yellow paper. Two women in their early twenties laughing and staggering about. One is Marie 1, as played by Jitka Cerhova; she is wearing a dark blue dress, has bunches in her dark brown hair and is stood on one leg. Both her arms are thrown in the air, one hand is holding a pair of scissors and the other a glass of wine which is spilling everywhere. The wine bottle is balanced on her head. Next to her is Marie 2, as played by Ivana Karbanova. She wears a light green dress and a wreath of flowers on her head. In one hand she holds a partly eaten chicken leg and in the other (at the end of an arm thrown around Marie 1's shoulders) is another spilling glass of wine. Spots of wine on the floor. Almost absurdly thick eyeliner on their closed, laughing eyes. This is not a scene from the film, just a made-up image which references a few scenes via the props.

I just checked and it is ten months since I last painted a picture. That's the longest i've ever gone without painting since I started when I was 17. I don't think I will ever paint again! I just want to draw. Drawing's brilliant. I love it.

A new picture!
Ink drawing with pencil colours on yellow paper. In the background, huge banks of yellow clouds with purple shadows drift across a dark blue sky. In the foreground, we have (improbably) two cliff edges facing each other, coming into the picture from left and right. The ledge on the right is a bit higher. On the left ledge sits an abstract, angular person in a stripey top with short blonde hair on top, hair shaved off round the back and sides, and beautiful eyes. Their head is resting in their folded arms which, in turn, are resting on the higher cliff edge on the right. Over on this side, we have what the person is idly watching: a small mansion. Well - either it is small or the person is a giant, either works. A strange creature, a bit lizardlike, a bit devil-like, with two spikes coming out of the flat top of his head, crawls down the front of the mansion and looks at the person. Most of the mansions windows are unlit, but a couple show yellow-lit rooms and we can see a couple of correctly-scaled people (for the mansion) at the windows. The sides of both cliffs are striped and match the person's top - dark green, light green, light yellow, dark yellow and grey

Superhero films then And Superhero films now
Blue Tit - bright, vibrant blues, whites, yellows and greens.Great tit - pretty much the same colours as the Blue Tit, but far more muted.
As a bird in its own right it's beautiful, but the contrasting shades of the birds suddenly reminded me of superhero films / costumes being quite darker, muted affairs these days.

Comedian / actor / Pepper Pig's Mum voice actor Morwenna Banks; long blonde hair, red dress, pink tights, sat with head in hands and just looking really quite beautiful Morwenna Banks in Vic & Bob's legendary bad dream / sketch parody of Masterchef. Her body is padded oddly, her head is lowered but her red-rimmed eyes look forward, long-ish black hair that looks wet and freezing cold. She is terrifying.

From the makers of "Insect Lives" and "Creatures with Jobs":
A rubbish movie poster for: TOY FILM. Along with this title and the words "only in a selected cinema" we see the two main characters. They are toys that have come to life, if you can imagine such a thing. One is The Long Cowboy, the other is Bob Spaceman. Both have a passing similarity to Woody and Buzz from some other film, but a bit more haunted and, well, rubbish. The Long Cowboy is saying "i am full of snakes" and Bob Spaceman is saying "let's gooooo ... to space!"

We've arrived at the time of year where I suddenly want to read everything. So I will. Starting with this.
'Can't Get You Out Of My Head - in search of Kylie', by Michael Cragg.
It's a chunky (though surprisingly light) hardback book, with the title written one word below the other down the left of the cover, and a small black & white photo of Kylie at top right. The rest of the cover is silver and shines like a rainbow in the light, a bit like her songs.

Bob Spaceman
Bob Spaceman - a rubbish version of Buzz lightyear. Basically a similar design - white space suit with visor and buttons and green and purple stripes here and there, but all distorted. His face is a ridiculously small circle in the middle of a huge purple balaclava sort of thing. He points at the sky and says his catchphrase, "let's goooooo... to space!"

the long cowboy
A drawing of an awful looking toy that is like a rubbish version of Woody from Toy Story. Far more distant and haunted looking. His hat is tiny and balances on his hair. His body is far too short, his arms and legs are waaaay too long. He wears a star that says 'star' on it. His nose is very thin and weirdly long. He is saying his catchphrase, "I am full of snakes."

At the cinema, we saw an unusual trailer for a stop-motion film called Wildwood. Unusual, because a lot of it was actually showing you the intricate work that goes into the sets and the puppets. Don't know if it was the intention, but it felt like: there's nothing to be proud of with AI creativity.

40 years ago, that corner of the bus would have had a small window where you could look down and check the top of the driver's head was okay. (I think the driver also used it as a kind of periscope to check on upstairs) I miss that.
Top deck of a bus, at the front. Windows looking out onto a sunny day, but sadly no little window that looks down onto the driver's place.

Right, time to go right back to the start... I've only once before watched the entirety of Doctor Who in order and, this time, I think i'm going to draw a one-character picture for each story. So, i think that's 319 pictures to come! Anyway, shush, it's starting.
My TV set, showing the title screen for the first episode of Doctor Who, from 1963: An Unearthly Child. These three words are superimposed over a glimpse of a police box standing in a scrapyard - i'm sure it's of little importance.
