I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

People out here cutting mangos into delicate little cubes, when I'm here waiting until they're soft enough to pull the skin off with my hands, slurping the flesh off, and gnawing on the stone like a feral animal, mango juices everywhere.

My energy supplier is constantly like "why won't you set up a direct debit with us" and like, you sent me an estimated bill saying I owed almost £200, and I took meter readings to prove I didn't, and you didn't believe me and sent a guy to do a reading, and what do you know, my actual bill is £35.27

We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.

Every time a discourse kicks off over whether AI music, literature or art will be "as good as" the real thing, I'm always amazed more people don't cite that **there already are** creative pursuits where human-free spectacles have been available for decades, and nobody has ever wanted to watch them.

Every time I see someone use their religion as an excuse to exclude trans people in some court case or other, I think about how I genuinely believe that it is my religious duty towards God to transition, and how stressed a judge would be if we ended up opposite each other in the same case.

I'm going to tell you a story and then, at the end, I'm going to ask you if anyone happens to have the niche knowledge I need to help... The story begins, as so many of my stories do, in an ancient church in the middle of a city. But it's not now. And it's not hundreds of years ago. It's the 1960's

Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

A Saint looks up from his prayers to
discover he’s been dead for some time
For St Robert of Knaresborough
By Jay Hulme - from 'The Vanishing Song'

After he retired to the cave
prayer grew in him like a forest,
sowed its seeds inside his psyche,
rewilded his heart. He didn’t
see that centuries had passed
without him.
                              One day he
looked up, hearing requests for
intercession, and the woods were
older than expected, the riverbanks
shifted by the years —
                                              and as he
knelt before the altar in his hermit's
church, his knees disappeared below
the edges of his emptied grave.

As autumn comes I find myself explaining to friends that when I put on more layers it's not because I'm cold, it's that I want to be Cozy, and though warmth and coziness share a close relationship they aren't necessarily related, and sometimes I can be toasty warm and still require more Coziness.

"Prostrate before God a final time I reach out my arms to the earth. This stone blooms with the millennia, this soil burrows with chitinous song; life bursts from the death of another — each earthly thing I've loved is fossil-rich, renewed, re-created, recycled, returned."
A Saint Dies Beside the Nidd
By Jay Hulme - from 'The Vanishing Song'

Prostrate before God a final time
I reach out my arms to the earth.
This stone blooms with the millennia,
this soil burrows with chitinous song;
life bursts from the death of another —
each earthly thing I've loved is fossil-rich,
renewed, re-created, recycled, returned.

Soon, I cannot consider the miracle,
only this moment, so wholly my own.
The breeze in the trees reminds me
of the song of my mother’s womb;
though I’ll only realise that later

— after I’ve gone.

"How to steal a Saint"
Fountains Abbey Vs Knaresborough Town - 1218
By Jay Hulme - from ‘The Vanishing Song’

How to steal a Saint
      You will need:
a large Abbey (to store them in)
a selection of monastic brothers (the keener the better)
            large sticks (just in case)

How to keep your Saint
      You will need:
a strong sense of loving connection (to brave the danger)
a few dozen angry locals (to face the monks)
some swords (to counter the sticks)

How to report the outcome
      You will need:
a good idea of what happened (do your research)
a coherent write-up (do not write a poem)
            a clear result (Knaresborough won)

"Every single one of us, carving a home through the dark."
The Hermit Studies Astronomy
By Jay Hulme from The Vanishing Song

 Wild man of the cave,
the locals tell stories about you.

Left alone in the darkness
you have been scratching
a home out of stone.

When the stars open up
far above, do you track
where we're going?

Every single one of us, carving
a home through the dark.

"Robert went mad in the way of saints; beautiful and holy and wild as anything. He grew into the cave, hands scratching at the earth; for weeks he watched the river."
The Madness of St Robert of Knaresborough By Jay Hulme - from The Vanishing Song'
Robert went mad in the way of saints; beautiful and holy and wild as anything. He grew into the cave, hands scratching at the earth; for weeks he watched the river. When knights and kings came with riches he told them things they never wanted to hear. Centuries later he still speaks to strangers, pilgrims to a past they cannot comprehend. If they listen, Robert offers them madness in whichever form they choose. One man chose murder. Buried the body in the cave. A sacrifice, perhaps. An atrocity instead of a prayer. More choose to go mad like him. A consecrated insanity. A heart crawling among the trees, fingers splayed across the stone, grafting themselves into the rock. They call out to God in rushing words - they sound like the echoing water, as it carves away at the cliff.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
