oh my godddd man WHY ARE YOU A TEACHER WHEN YOU HATE TEACHING SO MUCH
Three weeks into the semester, a hand went up in my class. It wasn't a question about the material. It was a question about me. "How closely are you reading the notes AI writes for you?" There was an edge in it, the kind of edge that says I already know the answer. Theo did. It had been one of those weeks, and I told the class the truth: not as closely as I should. I had looked at the big blocks of ideas, checked the formatting, and hit print.

I think mathematics is about more than just finding the answer to a problem. It's also fundamentally about the understanding and the connections (both human and conceptual) that we make, and the new ideas, questions and directions we discover along the way.

It feels like the OpenAI lads have just wandered in through the door and said "hey, I finished your jigsaw puzzle for you - you're welcome". But it's looking like some of the pieces don't quite fit, so we've got to do a load of work taking it apart again, and also go out and buy some new puzzles.

My heart breaks for mathematicians whose lives and careers are being destroyed by AI — and especially this PhD student, who doesn’t even know he is a poet
Kai Shaikh, a Ph.D. student in mathematics at the University of Toronto, also currently at SLMath, observed that theorems are easy to use as benchmarks, but that they capture little of the wonderment at the heart of math. "Just like a photograph of a mile marker can't provide much of the value of actually going on a hike," he said,
"it would seem to me that proofs without stories, or even stories without struggle or mystery, and first glimpses of strange beasts, are not very meaningful or valuable to us humans."

I asked my maths prof grandfather, a tech early-adopter his whole life, for his take on the AI in maths stuff. He said: maybe it can provide answers, but only humans can ask *new kinds of questions*, and that’s what drives the field forward, the questions not the answers.

On the other hand, my ex-wife's mum has never liked Stuart Hall from It's a Knockout, and she was absolutely right - he turned out to be a horrible wrong'un.

My mum and dad never liked him either, and I don't think there was any major reason for it other than perhaps they found his catchphrases a bit annoying.

Also: Two-hour episodes consisting of 90+ minutes of tiresome banter that should really have been a conversation in the pub, interspersed with occasional minutes of moderately informative (albeit superficial, fragmentary and under-researched) discussion.

The festival itself (Electromagnetic Field) was brilliant, and the camping went much better than all my previous experiences - which had variously included howling gales, torrential rain, and on one occasion a disappointing solar eclipse.

I actually did buy a tent a few months ago, despite my lifelong dislike of camping, to go to a festival. It cost £30. She should just buy another damn tent and stop wasting everybody's time.

My immediate response to the question "who owns this tent?" is "dear god, I hope it's not me".

I absolutely loved reading bedtime stories to my daughter, and I really miss it now that she's apparently a bit too old for it (12). I just can't comprehend the bleak emptiness that must exist in the heart of someone who would willingly outsource that precious shared time to a computer.

When I was a (maths) graduate student, my PhD supervisor discouraged me from using the word "clearly". If it's actually clear, then add a short sentence to justify/explain it. And if you can't do that, then it's not clear.

One of the advantages of having a teaching-focused post is that I'm not under constant pressure to keep applying for research grants, and I don't have to directly worry about the REF. As long as my teaching is good (which I'm regularly assured it is), I can do research (or not) at my own pace.

The one that starts as an episode of Juliet Bravo (complete with Anna Carteret) and then gets progressively sillier until she turns to camera and says "I suppose it's not too late to get Alexei Sayle back?" is truly brilliant.

Case study: the mean exam mark for one of my modules this year was 41.3% - roughly 15-20% lower than usual. Same syllabus, same teaching, very similar exam. I suspect that some students used LLMs to "explain" the subject to them rather than thinking hard with their own brains.

Whereas offloading their thinking to a probabilistic text generator is going to cause their brains and critical thinking abilities (such as they are) to atrophy further. Unfortunately I'm starting to see this with some of my students, so I'm trying to figure out what to do about that.

Every single one of the tech billionaires driving this "AI" bubble is demonstrably an awful and completely dysfunctional weirdo, and none of them are anywhere near as clever as they think they are. This is not a remotely healthy situation.

At the end of my BA, I got a notebook and asked lots of my friends and classmates to write something and sign it (and optionally leave a contact address). At some point, while I wasn't looking, someone I slightly knew went through and added "and Pete" to lots of the pages. I'd rather he hadn't.

I really liked that. During the first episode we meet Edward VI, played by a black actor, and I thought "ok, they've gone for colourblind casting, that's cool". Ten minutes later someone turns into a hawk and I thought "oh, right, I see now, this isn't just alternate history is it?". Splendid fun.
