I think we really need what I provocatively would call the #AI-bro versus #luddite meeting in science soon. The viewpoints are diverging, and neither is tenable. There is a need to start looking for common ground for the benefit of science.

It appears that many big institutions are gearing up to do biology with #AI and #robots. I remain skeptical, since, for example, #smartmicroscopy is still more of a buzzword than reality. The price tag on the infrastructure required will be enormous - unreachable by 99% of the research community.

The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Peter Hegemann, Georg Nagel and Karl Deisseroth
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2026 is awarded for optogenetics — a method that makes it possible to show how nerve cells shape memories, feelings and behaviours in the living brain. Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga. Karl Deisseroth transformed the protein into a light-controlled switch for nerve cells. The laureates have laid the foundation of a new era in neuroscience.

New and HOT in Chemical Science! 🔥 "Inhibitor fluorination pattern modulates protein surface dynamics and chemically induced dimerization" by Ute A. Hellmich and colleagues. Read for free: doi.org/10.1039/d6sc...
Schematic illustration of a molecular glue strategy targeting the Trypanosoma brucei redox protein Tpx. At the top, a trypanosome parasite is linked to a zoomed-in view of the Tpx redox cascade and a small-molecule glue structure. Three panels compare ligand-binding poses within a Tpx pocket containing a tryptophan (Trp) residue. Left: a detached ligand pose (green) fails to engage Trp, producing a weak molecular glue effect and low Tpx dimer affinity. Centre: a dynamic ligand pose (gold) shows transient interactions and intermediate glue strength. Right: an attached ligand pose (purple) forms stable interactions with Trp, generating a strong molecular glue effect and high Tpx dimer affinity. An arrow along the bottom indicates increasing chemically induced Tpx dimer affinity from left to right.
