It kind of does though? If not through journalists, how do we get verified information about anything? Sure, some things you can see with your own eyes and there are some alternative options for credible info, but for the absolute vast majority of things we need reporters

To my mind, the key point here is that Moscow faces the same trade-offs as everyone else. If Putin gets too close with Tehran, he annoys Israel and the Gulf. If he gets too close with Beijing, India won't be pleased and on and on and on. Russia is in a very complicated position.

Spent last week on a study trip to Colombia. Learned a great deal about organised crime and the geopolitics of the region. But most importantly, I met this little guy. And he was pretty big, especially considering that he just roams around a university campus. I think he looks so cool

It's not 100% certain yet, but it looks as if the Christian Democrats (CDU) have lost the election in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania so badly that they'll be kicked out of parliament. It's a massive humiliation for Germany's last remaining "Volkspartei." Under 5%!

I am of the generation that was entirely shaped by 9/11 and the GWOT. Our worlds changed irrevocably in ways we couldn't have imagined as young teenagers, watching the planes go into the towers. May all those who died - in the attacks, the wars, and their various terrible aftermaths - rest easy.

I'm on a train to Berlin right now, and it's obviously delayed. But the saddest thing is that I've mostly just accepted it. I no longer actually expect the trains to work. Or the internet. Or the phones. I've moved from anger to wanting to fix it to something awfully close to resignation.
