Membrane cytoskeleton, specifically septins. Nanobodies, superresolution. Developing microscopy assays for cell biology. We love complicated experiments! Opinions my own as scientist, parent, citizen.

How do cells stay strong yet adaptable? @gijsjekoenderink.bsky.social shows how cooperation between cytoskeletal filaments shapes cell mechanics: actin and vimentin jointly resist compression, plectin tunes viscoelasticity, and septins support cell shape and invasion.

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

Ancient protein families age like fine wines, layering flavour upon flavour over billions of years. Peeling back the layers needs an evolutionary lens: it might turn out the function that made them famous might not be the first or the most important one. Been super fun hashing this out with friends!
