The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

Computers were a skill. They were taught in classrooms as a skill. Skills give you power over your tools because you work them as an expert and that is leverage to multiply externally. And then computers became an A/B tested telemetry-based advertising conduit to brains for SaaS recurring revenue.

one problem w/so many analogies is that we intuitively gravitate to useful stuff; there's no easy shorthand for something as obviously counterproductive and disastrous that still tracks. it feels more like saying "DraftKings is collaborating with Cal to register undergrads to bet on course outcomes"

I was trying to find an old tweet about Hamlet and Ophelia. Google AI thought I was accusing it of killing my dad, and also screwed up the most famous line in The Princess Bride.
AI Overview

This phrase, "My father was also killed. by you," is famously from the movie The Princess Bride and is spoken by the character Inigo Montoya. It is a line used to express revenge and a lifelong quest for justice after a villain kills the hero's father. It is not a literal statement from a language model but a quote from a work of fiction, meaning Google did not kill your father.

this iconic advertising copywriter named Kathy Hepinstall Parks died over the weekend and I wanted to share something from her website I thought Bluesky would like
Why should I write better when a machine can do it for me?
Because actually no one can do it for you, because your voice is unique among all the people on earth. Siri never petted a horse's neck. Alexa has never been ghosted by the captain of the football team. But you have lived, your heart is beating, you have suffered, and you have something important to say. It's a human's job, to use words, and whatever job you give to a machine, that part of your brain goes dark. Maybe it's worth it when it comes to remembering phone numbers and directions, but when that part of your brain that uses words goes dark, that's a vast area that's very close to your soul. Don't let some internet platform convince you that what you have to say and create isn't worthwhile. Words are the echo of your soul. Honing that echo matters.

For my last trick, here’s the Agent Guide for ALIGNMENT, my completed manuscript. Huge shoutout to the amazing people behind this event for putting it on! #QueerPit #A #UF
A photo collage style moodboard on a plum background. The photos include a purple Ferris wheel, green magic illuminating a hand, two hands brushing in black and white, a partial image of a young man’s face, a display of Sharpies for sale, a total solar eclipse, a silhouette of a house with a purple sky behind it, an ink stained page, and green ivy partially covering a window.
Below these images is white, sharpie-style text saying “Alignment by Lizzy S. Briggs”The Pitch: Jack B. Nimble is all-too-familiar with his ex’s plans for world domination. He was supposed to be at the center of it, serving as his right-hand alchemist. Instead, after a brutal reckoning, Jack has crawled out of rock bottom by keeping his head down and avoiding his dark past. Jack’s fragile present as a barista for a magical coffee shop cracks when his illegal secret menu leads to his arrest. It fractures when his former best friend, now a cop, offers to be his parole officer after years of estrangement. It shatters entirely when his ex, Hugo, puts his plans into motion, blowing up the Magisterium in pursuit of both vengeance on Jack and a mysterious artifact. Jack learns he isn’t his ex’s only victim when a handsome necromancer tracks him down, leveraging Jack’s past to secure his help in stopping Hugo’s plan to usher in his new, demonic world order. Can Jack face his past - and his truth - in time to save the world from being rewritten?Comps - Valiant by Holly Black, Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, Finder by Emma Bull, The Last Sun by KD Edwards. Tropes - Childhood best friends to parolee/parole officer, magically bound together, only one bed/shower/mausoleum, second chance romance, actual love triangle, vengeful exes, queer AF. This text is surrounded by Polaroid-style photos of green flames, a coffee shop, a cathedral window covered in ivy, and a man’s hands in handcuffs
Favorite Quotes: “Magic gave us a second chance. Anyone who tries to tell you differently is selling something.” “It made sense he’d require a blood price for me to leave. I just hadn’t expected so much of it to be mine.” “When I was a kid, I used to pretend I could feel the warmth of my imaginary mother at my side, or the comforting weight of my invisible father’s hand on my shoulder. But I had neither, and those memories were stolen, phantoms borne of after-school specials, late-night sitcom reruns, and a desperate, aching hope that wouldn’t fucking die that one day, they’d come back for me. But I guess that’s what real faith is. Unkillable.” “Oh honey, you have no idea who I became without you.”

How to make ALIGNMENT: - 1 scrappy barista w/gift for enchanting - 2 old flames (1 MUST be evil) - 1 total solar eclipse - 2 forms of illegal magic - 1 pkg Sharpies Shake together with 2 large scoops of romance. Garnish with faerie dust. Makes 1 chance to save the world. #QueerPit #A #UF
Nine images in a grid, from left to right.
First row: black and white vintage coffee shop sign; half-shadowed image of a young man’s upper face with tan skin, tousled dark hair, and eyes downcast; a purple night sky with a silhouette of a house with one orange window partially obscured by a bare tree branch string with white fairy lights.
Second row: Photo of a hand curling around a bright green glowing orb; a color shot of a solar eclipse surrounded by clouds; a black and white photo of two hands, both male, one with fingers lightly brushing the back of the other hand.
Third row: a purple Ferris wheel at night; a wall of Sharpies for sale at a store; a photo of a broken cathedral window covered in green ivy.
