Lanterns Finale Recap: In Brightest Day Is this the best superhero show? Pretty handily. It’s also one of the best things on TV right now, period, with some of the most wrenching, introspective drama you’re likely to find. A pretty stunning adaptation. www.vulture.com/article/lant...

If there’s something that really worries me it’s that the kind of political movement that can achieve anything, left or right wing, may ultimately need to be totalizing in a way I find alienating.

A good fresh Star Trek take on those fake isekai title jokes
A tumblr screenshot showing a post and two reblog responses, reading:
1. "star trek would be the ideal fictional universe to get trapped in because you'd explain your situation and they'd be like yeah makes sense. no further questions. fortunately we can use the mysterious warp signature emitting from this system's icy moon to counterface with the solar radiation and slingshot you back home"
2. "I'm from a universe where your world is all a work of fiction." Benjamin Sisko, nodding. "That happened to me once."

Happening now in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview: A few hundred people are out protesting right-wing provocateur Jake Lang and his attempted "crusader march" on the local Palestine Fest going on nearby. Police in riot gear just formed a line, with Lang's group behind them.

I don't think I've made this point on this platform before it's no coincidence IMO that so much fash faux nostalgia AI slop is indistinguishable from the most gonzo dystopian "what the whole hep world would be doing Saturday night if the Nazis had won the war, this is the sixth Reich" parodies, IE:
its charlie kirk rting an obviously AI image of a 4th of july parade saying "this is what we're fighting for." indeed.its the roswell level from wolfenstein new order. if you haven't played it, it's really something. before going into the cafe, make sure to explore the whole level, sticking around to listen to the npc dialogue in full. fucking dead on.

Waymo is not a last-mile solution, nor a transit solution. And most certainly should not benefit from any of the transit funding we won in fighting for NITA. It is a car-centric proposal that offers no real systems change, shares all the same geometry, capacity, and environmental ills of cars.

Prison abolition is a specific and very materialist critique rooted in two big assertions: that incarceration is socially destructive (in concrete and measurable ways) and that the prison system does not provide the societal benefits that it purports to. Neither of those is relevant here!

Two completely different issues that by no means are contradictory. Prisons are institutional. Public shaming is social. We do not get to control people feelings. And reform by no means should require putting someone back to the position they held before. Especially as a media figure.

that reaction here — the way this guy is *emotionally real* to you but the story of what he did is otherwise just some abstracta, no matter your princples on justice for sexual assault in the general sense — is exactly the reason you should worry about a known rapist having a parasocial following

“Restorative justice” is a set of processes meant to be applied in the context of the harm done and involving all of the relevant parties. I don’t think it’s some panacea, or that anyone has really worked it out thoroughly, but it’s also just not a toolkit that’s available in this situation.

withholding public attention, fame, and acclaim, things many people live happily without every day, should not be discussed in the same terms as violent state sponsored retribution. doing so puts survivors of sexual violence in an impossible position.

i also think the author's fandom is clearly clouding her judgement. she talks about people having a problem with this man's "continued existence" when as far as i know execution is not on the table. not being famous isn't the same as death, and being rejected for your behavior isn't prison.

really don't like when pieces like this bring up the carceral state or a carceral mindset when talking about someone who is facing purely social consequences. i think it's really dangerous to frame any & all negative reactions to terrible behavior as carceral. it does not help the work of abolition.

I think what you do with Jacob Geller, if his work mattered to you, is you hold onto what things you learned from his work and you otherwise box him up and put him away. Geller the person is going to be fine (probably). Geller the public figure is over and I don’t think any injustice has been done.

I think this is spot on.
But even so, I find it striking that the way OpenAl pulls off these Mollick-astonishing feats is by spending truly immense sums.
Mollick writes "[Navier-Stokes] is among the most famous open problems in mathematics, with a $1 million prize, but OpenAl apparently solved it using Al alone in 88 hours." It is, of course, much more complicated than that. But what he particularly fails to mention is that OpenAl devoted 88 hours and 130 billion tokens to the task. All told, the company spent somewhere between $10 million and $40 million to solve Navier-Stokes in 88 hours.
This seems pretty relevant. It leads me to the following four observations:But even so, I find it striking that the way OpenAl pulls off these Mollick-astonishing feats is by spending truly immense sums.

God, underneath everything else I just hate Yud as a stylist. He’s such a bad, abrasive writer and it tells so much about the kind of people it works on.
The first virtue is curiosity. A burning itch to know is higher than a solemn vow to pursue truth. To feel the burning itch of curiosity requires both that you be ignorant, and that you desire to relinquish your ignorance. If in your heart you believe you already know, or if in your heart you do not wish to know, then your questioning will be purposeless and your skills without direction. Curiosity seeks to annihilate itself; there is no curiosity that does not want an answer. The glory of glorious mystery is to be solved, after which it ceases to be mystery. Be wary of those who speak of being open-minded and modestly confess their ignorance. There is a time to confess your ignorance and a time to relinquish your ignorance.
