Gracklepalooza is winding down, but it’s been a good one this year! While most are gone, there are still a few around though! This male Common Grackle was flying to the next tree over, and wanted to make sure we got a good look at his “common” colours🤣 #Birds 🪶
A male common grackle flys against a dark background. He is flying right to left and his wings are down so we can see the gorgeous purple iridescence!
His head is a vibrant blue that sets off his yellow eye!

A photo of a yellow-billed hornbill (Tockus flavirostris) perched on a slender horizonal tree branch holding a bright green praying mantis in its large bill. It's a medium-sized black and white hornbill with spotted upper wings, a long black tail, and a long, thick yellow-orange downcurving beak with a black stripe through the center of it. It has pale yellow irises and black and white streaking on its head. The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy

🪶 Rob has chosen #BestOfTheMonth as #BirdOfTheDay theme; you best shot for September - Quiet month for me; this encounter with a Juvenile Sparrowhawk was definitely the highlight #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky #Raptor #BirdOfPrey #Hawk
A Female Sparrowhawk sitting in a field of long grass. The bird is left of centre of the shot, facinf the camera and sitting in long grass so its bottom half is not visible.
The bird has a hooked beak with yellow at the base and bright yellow eyes. Its has a brown head with a prominent white eye stripe above the eye. Its back is brown and its breast and underbelly are whitish with strong grey-brown barring throughout.
Its is looking towards the right of the shot so that the right side of its head is shown.
In the foreground an out focus tuft of grass runs along the bottom of the frame, obscuring the bottom of the bird. Some kind of thistle can be seen to the left of the bird with pinkish flowers visible.
The background is long green grass, thistles and other vegetation

What Bird?🦜 @whatbirds.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A photo of a relatively large bird (25–27 cm / approx. 10 in long) perching on a wooden branch. It features a large, bright red beak, a deep brown head and neck, vibrant royal-blue plumage on its belly, and turquoise wing feathers.

Clue: This island-dwelling bird is named after its Indonesian home and shares a famous family name with a royal angler.

Fun fact: Instead of building a nest in tree branches, it digs long horizontal tunnels—sometimes up to a meter deep—into sunlit soil walls and earthen riverbanks to lay its eggs.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
