Two different species, a white-headed and a hairy woodpecker, are briefly perched on the same common mullein plant, for the #BirdBuddies theme of #BirdOfTheDay. Explanation in the alt description. #birds #nature #photography #ECK

A white-headed woodpecker (black with white head) and hairy woodpecker (black above, white below) are briefly perched opposite of each other with wings spreading on a flowering stalk of a common mullein (Verbascum thapsus). The woodpeckers were eating insect larvae they found in the plant. The white-headed was there first, but left as soon as the hairy arrived. The plant grew near the edge of a lake, which is seen in the background.
