What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌎 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉🐧🦆🦩🦅🪿🦚
A small, vibrant green songbird (11.5–13 cm / 4.5–5.1 in long) perched on a thin tree branch amid broad green leaves. It features a bright yellow crown, black markings around its eye and bill, black-streaked green wings, and subtle bluish-gray feet.

Clue: This jewel-toned songbird from the humid cloud forests of Central and South America gets its common name from a brilliant, precious gemstone.

Fun Fact: Despite its scientific name this bird isn't native to the U.S. state of Florida—florida comes from the Latin word for "flowery" or "blooming," referring to its bright, lush plumage!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Bird of the Day: Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) #birdoftheday #botd #greywagtail #motacillacinerea #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer 🔗 birdbrainer.app
A slim, long-tailed songbird standing on wet muddy rocks at the water's edge, facing left, with a soft blue- grey head and back, a thin pale eyebrow stripe, a fine dark pointed bill, a whitish throat and breast blending into a lemon-yellow wash on the belly and undertail, dark grey-brown wings with pale feather edges, a very long dark tail with white outer feathers, and slender pale legs, against a blurred grey-blue water background.

Text on card: Found across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, inhabiting fast-flowing streams, rivers, waterfalls, and millraces, and in winter commonly found at sewage works, reservoirs, and coastal marshes. Despite its name, the grey upperparts are less striking than the vivid yellow underparts and rump that flash in flight.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌏 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A relatively large, charcoal-black bird (55–60 cm / 22–24 in long) perched upside down near the top of a bare wooden branch against a clear blue sky. It features a dramatic spiky crest, a massive hooked beak, and a bright red bare patch on its cheek.

Clue: With my smoky black plumage, striking crest, and crimson cheek patch, I am Australia's largest of my kind—known for my musical talent with sticks!

Fun Fact: This bird is one of the only non-human animals known to use manufactured tools rhythmically—males break off sturdy sticks or seed pods to drum against hollow trees, creating a unique beat to attract a mate.

Conservation status: Near Threatened (IUCN 3.1)

Bird of the Day: Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) #birdoftheday #botd #tuftedtitmouse #baeolophusbicolor #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer | birdbrainer.app
A small bird perched on the tip of a weathered branch, leaning forward with a pointed gray crest, soft gray upperparts and wings with darker flight feathers, pale whitish-gray face and underparts, a warm rusty- orange wash on the flanks, a large dark eye with a faint dark forehead patch, a short stout black bill, and slender blue-gray legs, against a soft blurred blue and golden background.

Text on card: A small, crested songbird of eastern North American deciduous and mixed forests, found from southern Ontario and New England south through the eastern United States into Mexico, inhabiting woodland, parks, orchards, and suburban gardens. Bold and inquisitive, it readily visits garden feeders, and is recognised by its prominent pointed grey crest, large dark eyes, and the soft peach-orange wash on its flanks; it often caches seeds for later retrieval.

What bird is this? 🤔 (See alt text for clue) 🌍 #whatbird | #birdsoftheworld | #birds 🦉
A large bird of prey (1.9–2.4 m / 6.2–7.9 ft wingspan) standing amidst tall green grass. It features a striking white head and breast, a yellow face and beak with a dark hook, and deep chestnut-brown plumage on its body and wings against a softly blurred natural background.

Clue: Known as the "voice of Africa," this majestic raptor is a master angler whose echoing call is a signature sound of Sub-Saharan waterways.

Fun Fact: Their feet are lined with sharp structures called spiricules to help them grip slippery, wriggling fish straight out of the water!

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Bird of the Day: Western Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) #birdoftheday #botd #westerncattleegret #cattleegret #bubulcusibis #birdsoftheworld #birds #birdbrainerapp #birdbrainer | birdbrainer.app
A compact white bird standing upright among small purple wildflowers in dry grass, with a pale buff- orange wash on the crown and upper breast, a sturdy yellow-orange bill, yellow eye, and pale yellowish legs, against a dark out-of-focus background

Originally native to sub-Saharan Africa, the Western Cattle Egret has spread to become one of the most widespread herons in the world, colonising the Americas, Australia, southern Europe, and many oceanic islands over the past century. Associates closely with cattle and other large animals, catching insects disturbed from the ground; in breeding plumage, the bill and legs briefly flush orange-red and buff plumes adorn the head, breast, and mantle

Clue: This island-dwelling bird is named after its Indonesian home and shares a famous family name with a royal angler.
