For #SquirrelSaturday I have a close up of a Red Squirrel standing on a wooden handrail in the forest . It’s head, arms and upper body can be seen as it glances at the camera #naturetherapy #naturephotography #ECK #redsquirrel #squirrel #sqrlpix #ireland #irishwildlife #ColorADay #GreenSat
A Red Squirrel close up, standing on a wooden handrail in the forest. The animal is in the bottom left of the shot with its right side showing. Its head, chest, back and arms can be seen.
It has red fur, a little darker at the top of its head. It has a beige coloured eye ring and muzzle, its long whiskers can be seen against the background. The long claws and black finger pads of the left hand can be seen below its body, the right hand is out of frame.
Two thin stems of willow are growing behind and above the animal, dark green and with leaves either side.
In the background the wooden railing and steel joining plate can be seen continuing; both out of focus.

🪶 Rob has chosen #Black&Red as #BirdOfTheDay theme; any bird with black and red in its plumage Alternative is #LongBeaks, birds with long beaks I’ll go alternative with a Common Snipe in long grass on a sunny day #birdphotography #ECK #birds #birdsofbluesky #naturephotography #ColorADay #GreenSat
A Common Snipe standing in long grass in the bright sunshine. The bird is left of centre of frame and in side profile; looking right so that its right side is visible.
It is a sticky wader with a long, straight bill (the end of which is hidden behind vegetation). It has mottled brown, black and straw-yellow plumage with light stripes across the head and back. Its cryptic plumage make for great camouflage. The underbelly is white with dark streaks and it has greyish legs.
The bird is standing behind some large iris stalks, which obscure the tail and end of the beak. The background is a mass of mostly bright green vegetation

🪶 Helen has chosen #BestBeaks as #BirdOfTheDay theme; a bird with a beak/bill with striking colours, bold profiles or an interesting shape Alt. is #YellowElements; the colour yellow found on a bird - Pink-Backed Pelican, with a yellow bill #birdphotography #ECK #birds #photography #birdsofbluesky
A Pink-Backed Pelican standing on a rock in an artificial pond, facing the camera. The bird is left of centre of frame and is facing the camera with its head turned to the left so that its left side is visible. It has a long, yellowish bill, which is tucked into its body and pointing downward, slightly open. The plumage on its head and back are a light grey and its underbelly is white. It has a white crest on the top of its head which is drooping behind its eye. It has pink, webbed feet with prominent nails at the end of the toes.
The rock is a light sand colour, washed from past bird droppings. The water around it has a green tinge and there is an artificial, concrete bank behind it with three shallow channels scored across it parallel with the water line. The background is a wall of boulders in shadow.

Atlantic Birding has set today's #BirdOfTheDay to #Black&White. Here's an egret I saw out at the wetlands, thought it made for a good subject for the monochrome treatment. #Photography #Birds #Egrets #ClassicMono
A great egret stands on a gnarly branch that runs horizontally across to bottom of the frame. Its back is to the camera but it is looking left so its head and neck is in profile. Behind several palm trees form small fans of light. Sky above and behind is completely blown out which is another good reason to give this the black and white treatment. 😁

A black and white photograph of a Snowy Egret that is standing in the shallows of the beach with a soft wave braking in the background.

Interesting information:
Among the most elegant of the herons, the slender Snowy Egret sets off immaculate white plumage with black legs and brilliant yellow feet. Those feet seem to play a role in stirring up or herding small aquatic animals as the egret forages. Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species is once again a common sight in shallow coastal wetlands. Male and female Snowy Egrets take turns incubating their eggs. As one mate takes over for the other, it sometimes presents a stick, almost as if passing a baton. Both parents continue caring for the young when they hatch. During the breeding season, adult Snowy Egrets develop long, wispy feathers on their backs, necks, and heads. In 1886 these plumes were valued at $32 per ounce, which was twice the price of gold at the time. Plume-hunting for the fashion industry killed many Snowy Egrets and other birds until reforms were passed in the early twentieth century. The recovery of shorebird populations through the work of concerned citizens was an early triumph and helped give birth to the conservation movement. Snowy Egrets sometimes mate with other heron species and produce hybrid offspring. They have been known to hybridize with Tricolored Herons, Little Blue Herons, and Cattle Egrets.
