Generative Al has helped me to understand why, in Star Wars, the droids seem to have personalities but are generally bad at whatever they're supposed to be programmed to do, and everyone is tired of their shit and constantly tells them to shut up

That’s Life! was just incredible. Its two most famous moments are a man being movingly celebrated by the now grown Jewish children he got out of Nazi Germany & a dog saying “sausages”. No other programme has ever had that range.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

The guy with his back to us is now Bert, but Bert is being operated by Frank Oz, who is crouched down in front of the counter. The waiter/server is now Jim Henson who is looking intently at Kermit, and Kermit, who is occupying half of Jim's right arm, is looking intently at Jim. The diner is now called "JIMMYS".

A three panel comic done in mostly a blue-purple ink. Frame 1: The artist, a tired person with their hair in a bun and a bag on their shoulder standing in the awning of a bus shelter. There's an ad on it that says "STOP HIRING HUMANS", above a woman whose face has been replace with the word "AI".
Frame 2: The bus comes, it's wrapped in an ad that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS." The artist has a blank look.
Frame 3: A plane has now arrived above the bus and the human. It's carrying an ad banner that also says "STOP HIRING HUMANS".
