Churchill specifically wanted ‘corkscrew’ thinkers. He believed that the Germans were too conventional, conservative. Too ‘straight’ Geoffrey Pyke. Prolific inventor. Very beardy and weird Turing. Code breaker. Gay. Dudley Clarke. Invented SAS. Bonkers. Cross dresser

There is no truth more universally acknowledged yet universally ludicrous than “a government is defined by its first 100 days.” Cameron: Brexit Blair: Iraq Biden: Afghanistan withdrawal Trump 1: covid George W: 9/11 Obama: healthcare Im not convinced it’s even true of FDR Churchill? Fair enough

You should prosecute politicians when they break the small laws, because you won’t have the chance later, when they break the big ones.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

George IV was a drug addled, capricious, delusional monster obsessed with hyper gaudy interior design. He retreated from the real world and became convinced that he had defeated Napoleon at Waterloo.

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

There was a very active critic of the history syllabus in the 90s. Very wise people scoffed at how much time kids were forced to spend learning about the Nazis and democratic decay in the 30s. Turns out we should have gone much harder.

In 2025 trade unions gave £4.9 million to Labour. Individual donors gave £16 million to Reform & £9 million to the Tories. In total Labour raised £10 mill, Reform £19 mill & the Tories £21 mill. If the *unions* are blocking a donor cap, they've lost their minds www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Andy Burnham has dropped his support for capping political donations, causing anger among activists and Labour MPs who have long campaigned for change to the way parties are funded.

The prime minister has decided not to back amendments to the elections bill, which would cap the amount a person or an organisation can give in a single donation, according to government sources.

The decision comes after a lobbying campaign from Labour’s trade union backers, who said amendments to the bill, which returns to parliament for its remaining stages next week, could undermine their ability to donate to the party. It is also a retreat from the support Burnham gave to the idea just a few weeks ago, when he emailed a campaigner for electoral reform to say he would support a donations cap of £500,000.

It’s odd how often you hear people arguing for dialogue, common-ground & consensus seeking, when historically the best policy is often utterly destroying vile ideas, humiliating their proponents, liberating their adherents & salting the earth so that they never seep out of a putrid morass ever again

There’s a problem with the ‘devolved powers are the answer’ theory- voters do not punish & reward appropriately. Say Reform win control of a region. They prove incompetent muppets. Everything gets worse. They blame Westminster. Voters punish national government for failure in a devolved area

The nearest analogy - which no one is drawing - would be the Midlothian Campaign in 1880. Gladstone had retired in 1875 and his party had chosen new leaders. But in 1880 he roared back, contesting the Tory seat of Midlothian. When he won, the new leaders resigned & he returned to the premiership.
