Bit of a wobble in Dick Davies' voice as he signed off, saying 'support BBC cricket commentaries' Hear, hear. End of an era. We'll never have a broadcaster commentating on one team for 31 years ever again

130 was what England set Australia at Headingley in 1981. Still the most remarkable come from behind victory in history. This would arguably top it.

I was honoured to be invited onto BBC Test Match Special last weekend to talk about my book, The Women in Whites: A History of Women's Cricket in England. The interview is still available for a few hours, so do have a listen here if you missed it (3.29 onwards): www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

This thing seems to be out in the open now, so even though publication’s eight months away, let’s drum up some early interest, shall we? Wayfarers is out next April. Here’s the cover.
A book cover. Wayfarers: The Incredible Story of Animal Migration, by Lev Parikian. It’s mostly blue, with swirling patterns representing movement, and stylised images of various migrating animals (butterflies, terns, a whale, bats, wildebeest, dragonflies, penguins, an arctic fox) dotted about the place.

I recall a fascinating test match 34 years ago, the summer when we were introduced to reverse swing in dramatic fashion by its most skilful proponents. But a more traditional style of bowling prevailed in Leeds. Here's a puzzle in homage 🏏😀 @georgedobell.bsky.social @norcrosscricket.bsky.social

Semi-seriously though, this is no different from sunset at the equator/tropics, except it’s the horizon that does the eclipsing. Granted it will get lighter for a little while, but not long. The bloody sun sets at 8:29 in London today.

It really is a fabulous book which doesn’t shy away from examining how the women running women’s cricket for decades were every bit as regressive and elitist as their MCC counterparts in the men’s game, while still celebrating some true heroines I knew nothing about.

I would increase the number of kids playing cricket every week by 4000%, and put all domestic and international matches on free to air television while maintaining the value of the current rights deals. Easy to do, but no one has dared to do it properly.

Umpire’s call for impact seems wrong. There is no predictive element, is there? For the guesswork thereafter it makes sense, but you don’t get umpire’s call in tennis line decisions.
