It's official! BlueSky is the app for reading! So, let's all read a book together AND support an incredible small press! We're discussing Acid Green Velveton Wed October 28. More info in the link. And if you don't trust our recommendation of the book, you can ask @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social
portersquarebooks.com
BlueSky Book Club: Acid Green Velvet
Acid Green Velvet is less a novel and more a seduction. A story of decay and decadence, family and betrayal, crime and capitalism, Krilanovich's first novel in almost twenty years, focuses on Paulette, a life-long grifter who has wormed her way into the richest and most powerful household in the town, just as a swell of vagrants, con artists, and would be revolutionaries threaten to overthrow the social and economic order. Acid Green Velvet is a truly fecund novel filled with breathtaking images, brain-halting sentences, and lots of unanswered questions.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

This is thrilling. Some initial evidence of hybridization among coexisting seabirds. In this case, you can clearly a cormorant head on, basically, a pelican body. Groundbreaking if I can find more examples. But even as a one-off, it's pretty cool.

I'm told by @sarahlovesbirds.bsky.social that "The COASST program has volunteers that label and record data from dead birds that wash up. Also provides data about how long carcasses stick around on beaches." So the labels visible here are so they don't double count, etc.

There were dead birds washed up near the lighthouse I visited today. They looked vulnerable and poignant, no different in their way from a shipwreck victim from a century ago. The bodies fragile and too harshly treated by the light, but also beautiful and somehow remembered by wave and wind and rock

Hey , if you're in Lincoln Cit, OR, and could use some laughs, I'll be at the Driftwood Library at 4pm talking about some of the outrageous situations I've been in over the years, along with some Florida vs Oregon commentary. My opening act is Brian, a tufted puffin, or in his parlance a "pàffön".

On a personal note, it was a delight to be interviewed by Becca Rothfeld, whose nonfiction I love, including her piece on Rachel Cusk recently. She is one of the many, many sharp, analytical writers who in their substance and style are their own intrinsic argument against generative AI.

What a brilliant piece. It reads like a fictional journey to a fictional society in part because she is describing a cult. A man more or less LARPing into oblivion while causing harm in the medium and short term.

I think elk look so fey. There's something about them that feels preternatural in a noble way. Also, they can fuck yer shit up over at Cannon Beach if you're stupid enough to try to pose with them for a selfie.
