In this moment of higher ed upheaval, the UMass Amherst Department of Sociology is initiating the Research Scholar Program to offer some safe harbor for recent sociology PhDs launched into an uncertain market. Share widely! (and imitation = sincerest form of flattery). @asanews.bsky.social
This program description details parameters of the UMass Amherst Sociology Department Scholar Program. As the description states, we cannot offer much, but what we can offer prospective Research Scholars is: (1) a listing on our department website, (2) use of our library resources, (3) an @soc.umass.edu email address, (4) permission to use departmental e-letterhead for professional correspondence, and (5) an invitation to any department intellectual events. Research Scholars will meet as a cohort twice over the course of the academic year (once in fall, once in spring). A brief one-page statement of interest, CV, and the names and contact information of 2 references should be sent to the Department Chair (David Cort, dcort@soc.umass.edu) by October 30, 2026. Applicants will be notified of the status of their application by mid-November.

a new paper forthcoming in Social Forces! focusing on the killing of George Floyd & the BLM, I study the formation of generations, proposing that formative events can create within-cohort differentiation as much as between-cohort differentiation. read here: tkeskinturk.github.io/imprinting.pdf
Generational Imprinting: How Political Events Shape Cohorts
Contemporary narratives of generational politics propose that formative experiences produce shared political opinions across an age cohort. In this article, I advance a theory of cohortization to challenge that view, arguing that large-scale political events produce differentiation within cohorts as much as differentiation between them. I investigate the implications of this framework through the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, analyzing attitudes toward law enforcement among non-Hispanic White Americans from 2016 to 2024. Using survey data from Cooperative Congressional Election Study, American National Election Study, and the Nationscape, I show that younger and older cohorts diverged after the event, but this differentiation was driven exclusively by young Democrats and Independents. The end result was not a unified generation, but one internally divided along party lines. This finding qualifies theories of generational politics, emphasizing that formative experiences may intensify existing political divisions within cohorts.

There's chronological and following only feeds, maybe more to come, and you can organize papers into lists for your own use.

In this class students will learn about cutting edge research examining the origins, impacts, and struggles over the broad set of technologies and practices involving AI. Through an international focus, this class will cover numerous topics related to AI, including: gig work, algorithmic bias, data colonialism, resource extraction, digital labor, data center studies, and environmental and climate effects. This class will primarily focus on sociological research, but will also include scholarship from geography, history, international studies, and environmental studies, as well as other social scientific and humanistic disciplines. 🚨New working paper alert!🚨 Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have grown rapidly. Who uses them? Do they improve kids' skills? BU econ PhD student Samuel Nitkin and I provide answers in: "Kumon Up: Private Tutoring Centers and Student Achievement" www.nber.org/papers/w35671 1/?
Private tutoring chains like Kumon and Sylvan have expanded rapidly in recent decades.
Combining data on business locations, household spending, and district test scores, we study who
uses these centers and how they affect academic skills. Nearly half of tutoring users are from the top
income decile, with Asian and White households five and two times as likely to purchase tutoring as
Black and Hispanic households. A staggered differences-in-differences design shows the opening
of a district's first chain center raises district-wide math and reading scores by 0.02-0.03 standard
deviations, at a much lower cost than public spending typically producing similar gains. Math
effects are largest for White and Asian students, so that center entry widens racial achievement
gaps, though less so in more racially integrated districts. These private investments help their
users, deepen educational inequality, and shape outcomes by which state accountability systems
and families judge schools.
