The pathologies of popularism are further evident in the retirement of Jared Golden. A moderate Democrat who won a Trump-leaning district in Maine, he is something like a LeBron James of politics for popularists. As we noted, however, by 2025 his favorability was deep in the red. In an apparent exception to the popularist principle that you must obey public opinion rather than try to change it, Yglesias did not counsel Golden to retire early due to his low favorability but rather claimed that
"progressive criticism of Golden has driven him from office." To add insult to injury, Golden joined Suozzi as one of the seven House Democrats to vote to
increase DHS funding two weeks ago - and he took this vote after he announced he wouldn't run again.
So much for Ezra Klein's argument that Democrats must "learn from" Golden.

But I think the base has stopped believing the pitch—first, because it didn’t appear to work in a couple of moderate nominee losses, so that strategy fell flat in terms of electoral victories. But then Bonica hit this other point, which is, that’s a costly action. I’m just taking trans rights activists as an example of a faction within the Democratic Party network that is being asked to put its priorities on the back burner for now. That’s a costly thing for the faction to do on behalf of the whole party, right? And the establishment as well, party elites are hitting you up for donations, saying, “Democracy’s on the line, we all need to sacrifice. That also includes trans rights activists falling back.” But then in office, the Democratic Party in Congress does not appear to be taking costly actions. And then Adam’s point on corruption is one of the biggest ones, where it doesn’t look like the Democratic Party is, at the elite level, willing to do costly new actions for itself that would put the party as a whole in a better position: whether that’s older, unpopular nominees retiring before dying in office; whether that’s not doing corrupt insider dealing or taking big super PAC money; whether that means, if you’re telling trans rights activists or Greta Thunberg climate kids or Gaza activists to fall back, then on an unpopular issues like data centers and some AI policies and weapons to Israel (which is polling at 11 percent support), you also need to take a haircut on those. And I think the base is noticing, “wow, you consistently are pointing out that the Democratic Party needs to moderate on these issues you don’t care about but the base seems to, and not the ones that are unpopular to the median voter that the democratic elites like and the base doesn’t like.” So that is all really reduced credibility in this appeal from the party that, “trust us, we know how to do electability.”

One reason vote-by-mail remains under attack by Republicans is because of who it helps turn out.

Two New York Times charts on Colorado's all-mail voting, from research by Adam Bonica, Jacob Grumbach, Charlotte Hill, and Hakeem Jefferson.

Top chart, "Which Coloradans benefited most from all-mail voting," shows the difference between actual and projected turnout in Colorado's 2018 election. By race: African-American voters gained about 11 percentage points, Asian about 9, Latino about 8, white about 7.5. By education: less than a high school diploma about 10 points, high school diploma, some college, and bachelor's degree about 9 each, graduate degree about 7. By household wealth: $0 to $5k gained about 11 points, with gains shrinking as wealth rises to about 6 points for households over $500k.

Bottom chart, "Mailing every Coloradan a ballot increased voting across all age groups," plots actual 2018 turnout against projected turnout without all-mail voting, by age from under 30 to 90. Actual turnout is higher at every age. The gap is widest for the youngest voters, roughly 14 points near age 30, and narrows to about 5 points for voters in their 70s and 80s. These are the kinds of emails Mothership is excited to push past Gmail's spam filter: "Trump slashes $460/month from your Social Security check?!" or a $1,400 "stimulus check" the recipient is missing. Click through and you end up at an ActBlue page with recurring payments pre-checked.

The left side repeats the email's message: "TERRIBLE NEWS FOR SENIORS ON SOCIAL SECURITY," a claim that seniors could face cuts of over $400 per month, and a request to "give at least $50 to Stop Republicans PAC now." The right side shows a checkout form with a $50 amount pre-selected, a "Make it monthly!" checkbox already checked, and payment buttons for card, PayPal, and Google Pay.

Worth noting for whatever post accompanies this: the pre-checked monthly recurring box is the detail that matters most here. The petition email said nothing about donating — "sign the petition" was the ask — and the landing page converts that into a $50/month recurring charge unless the donor notices and unchecks the box. Pre-checked recurring boxes are the specific practice the FTC has gone after in commercial contexts and one of the things ActBlue's reforms were supposed to address. If you're posting this as the follow-through of the petition funnel, that's the one-line caption: the "petition" resolves to a pre-filled $50 monthly donation.

Also — the number moved again. Email said $460; landing page says "over $400." Between this and the $500 version in your published piece, you've now got the same fake statistic at three different values across the same network's materials, which is about as clean a demonstration as you'll get that the figure is copy, not fact.

My mom was hounded by these operations until her death because these pitches preyed upon her desire to be useful and involved, even as she cognitively deteriorated. She was giving money she didn’t have, subtracting from the money I gave her for groceries, etc. Vile practices, betraying their base.
