a new paper forthcoming in Social Forces! focusing on the killing of George Floyd & the BLM, I study the formation of generations, proposing that formative events can create within-cohort differentiation as much as between-cohort differentiation. read here: tkeskinturk.github.io/imprinting.pdf
Generational Imprinting: How Political Events Shape Cohorts
Contemporary narratives of generational politics propose that formative experiences produce shared political opinions across an age cohort. In this article, I advance a theory of cohortization to challenge that view, arguing that large-scale political events produce differentiation within cohorts as much as differentiation between them. I investigate the implications of this framework through the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, analyzing attitudes toward law enforcement among non-Hispanic White Americans from 2016 to 2024. Using survey data from Cooperative Congressional Election Study, American National Election Study, and the Nationscape, I show that younger and older cohorts diverged after the event, but this differentiation was driven exclusively by young Democrats and Independents. The end result was not a unified generation, but one internally divided along party lines. This finding qualifies theories of generational politics, emphasizing that formative experiences may intensify existing political divisions within cohorts.

9/ A month in, I was betting so much that DraftKings’ quick-tap deposit buttons had increased to $500, $750 and $950, making it even easier to mindlessly transfer money into my account. I was also getting pummeled with push alerts inviting me to bet more.
A pile of phone notifications from DraftKings layered on top of one another. Each notification offers a promotion or boost.A dropdown menu reads “Deposit” and shows dollar amounts for $500, $750, $950 and Other, along with a “Slide to Deposit” button.

People need "community." Bars need a business model: www.fingers.email/p/people-nee...
"That's the price you pay to be in community," Matellian, Last Ditch's third founder, gamely told Quinn, inventorying her various woes. It's a spectacular kicker to the piece. But with respect to Greenfield's indebted, involuntary publican, I don't think that's the lesson of her parable. Or, it's not the most salient lesson for our purposes, at least. To wit: American commerce is organized in such a way that bars must be businesses first and third places second. That order doesn't account for the social value that a good bar reproduces among its regulars and in its neighborhood. But neither will the bank. And no matter how wholesome and nourishing the community a failing business manages to build, somebody always has to pick up the tab.

How many times should your ad say the candidate's name? A simple question, but a big one. We tested one to seven name mentions on 10,000 voters, and the answer is three to five: enough that nobody forgets who the ad was about, with every remaining second spent on message.
