A Researcher Adds What’s Been Missing From the UC Testing Debate: Nuance
A new brief by a prominent scholar argues that some criticisms of the University of California’s test-free policy are predicated on assertions that simply aren’t true.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER
The College Board, publisher of the SAT, has been claiming for decades that high
school GPAs were increasingly unhelpful for admissions due to rampant grade inflation.
But, while the existence of grade inflation is not disputed, the evidence in support of the
claim that high school GPAs have been so inflated as to be meaningless is surprisingly
thin.

There are several reasons to doubt the claim, at least as it applies to the UC. First,
validity studies (discussed above) – even the STTF report, despite the methodological
limitations noted above – continue to show that high school GPAs are strongly
predictive of success in college. Second, a commonly observed pattern is that grade
inflation is more rampant at upper-middle-class public and private high schools, and less prevalent at schools serving more disadvantaged students. This pattern would help the high school GPA’s predictive validity, since students from the former schools are generally better prepared for college. Third, policies that guarantee admission to applicants ranked in the tops of their classes by GPAs have led to increases in diversity of admitted applicants, and evidence indicates that the students so admitted benefitted, in terms of their college and career outcomes, from their admission, relative to the outcomes they would have achieved had these policies not been in place (Black, Denning, Rothstein 2023, Bleemer 2024). This result would be unlikely if GPAs, and by extension class ranks, were meaningless.

I always find it helpful to look at (a) levels and (b) non-seasonally adjusted data alongside the seasonal. Here I've done both. You can see why the SA employment looks like it declined, but also why it is important to be cautious in interpretation - the SA algorithm has a *lot* of work to do here.
Seasonally adjusted and non-seasonally-adjusted employment in local government education from July 2016-July 2026. Source is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Current Employment Statistics series; the graph was made by FRED, a tool provided by the St. Louis Fed.

I just finished reading “Seeing Like a State.” It argues that “high modernism” (Brasilia, soviet collectivization, Tanzanian forced villagization) failed because it put complex humanity into overly-simple schema. I think it has interesting things to say about AI’s impact on the labor market. 🧵

JOB POSTING – RESEARCH ANALYST
POSTING DATE: May 1, 2026
The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research is seeking a talented Research Analyst to support
social science PhD researchers with statistical programming, analysis of data, and other analytical
tasks for research projects. The ideal candidate for this position will have demonstrated programming,
data management, analytical, writing, and communication skills through a bachelor’s or graduate
degree in quantitative social sciences or a related program. The position offers the opportunity for
career growth with promotions based on performance and experience, and initial placement is
commensurate with experience.
Research Analysts work closely with PhD researchers on empirical projects related to the labor market
and the economy. Their work largely involves statistical programming; assembling, structuring, and
managing databases; analysis of data; and preparation of empirical results for presentation in reports,
working papers, and articles. Tasks also may include writing documents that describe how data were
processed, designing and maintaining databases, conducting literature reviews, proofreading final
written documents, and contributing to the development of software programs to implement frontier
statistical analysis.
Hybrid work arrangements (both in-office and remote work) may be available depending on the nature
of assigned research projects, but the position is not fully remote. Projects involving confidential data
may require the incumbent to undergo fingerprinting and a background check.
A bachelor’s degree with experience in statistics, econometrics, and computer programming is
required. Demonstrated research experience—e.g., working with a faculty member on a research
project or independent research through a graduate program—is desirable.
Knowledge of basic statistical and econometric methods; experience with at least one statistical
programming language, p…

A WHOLE CIVILIZATION
WILL DIE TONIGHT
My son needs lunch, and I have to put his backpack together, but a whole civilization will die tonight, so I'm wondering if they've closed their schools.
Like, a snow day, maybe, except instead of snow it's
"keep your children home so if you die, you die together" — instead of "well open back up once the plows have cleared" it's
"we don't know if we'll be here tomorrow, hold your babies tight."
It's just "talk" I'm told, which I've been told before.
"It's how the president makes his deals." But I've never heard anyone talk about other human beings this way, and I'm not certain I can look my son in the eyes if we all agree to stomach it one more time.
A civilization will die tonight, but as I zip up his backpack and kiss him off to school I think: if this is what we call leadership then I'm not entirely sure ours isn't already dead.

Good thread and article. One factor it doesn't mention is that survey response rates have fallen a lot. The CPS (households) has gone from near 90% to <70%; the CES (estabs) from 60%+ to 42%; the JOLTS is in the low 30s. That hurts reliability and increases revisions. www.bls.gov/osmr/respons...
