Are you upset by the DA in the Cornell rape case saying that fact that Jane Doe voluntarily drank alcohol means that no crime was committed? He could have investigated further, but the bad news is that this is how New York State law handles alcohol and consent. Voluntary first sip? No crime.

None of the 3 Black sororities at Cornell have residential houses. They have the sisterhood but not the intergenerational wealth, rich alumni, or well-heeled national org to afford one. Chi Phi ought to hand over the Xi house, a maintenance endowment, & a generous remodeling budget to one of them.

This is another attack on the so-called "feminization" of higher education, abetted by widespread ideology (also held by far too many uni leaders) that education has no value beyond a taxpayer-subsidized job training program for corporations. Also part of effort to resegregate higher education.

As someone writing about U.S. backlash politics, its daunting to think about the success of efforts to undo so many post-WWII achievements, including civil rights (including CRA/VRA), vaccines/public health, women’s rights (Roe), environmentalism, LGBTQ rights, massive expansion of higher ed, etc.

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

If I was a DA defending my decision to drop a rape case that's received international attention, I'd proofread my statement before releasing it. You know, to remove ctrl-c/ctrl-p errors that might make people think I used Chat and question my competence. www.tompkinscountyny.gov/News-article...
In November of 2024, the Cornell University Police Department (CUPD) informed the DA’s Office of their investigation in this case and asked us to review a statement provided by Jane Doe to determine if her allegations constituted a crime under New York law. Law enforcement agencies commonly consult with us on questions of evidence, matters of law, and potential charges, if any.

In November of 2024, the Cornell University Police Department (CUPD) asked the District Attorney’s Office to review a statement provided by Jane Doe. This is not unusual. It is common practice for law enforcement agencies to consult with the DA’s Office when investigations involve significant or legally technical matters such as those involving allegations of sexual conduct and questions about the legal definition of “lack of consent.”

I've reviewed 100s of inequality papers in sociology. Some fantastic, some abysmal, most in between. I can recall very few papers as weak as Rubin's report by criteria of logical coherence, objectivity, and evidentiary standards. The irony would be funny, if there wasn't so much at stake.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

Unis also juice perceptions when they simplify the 100s of possible combinations of student-reported r/e identities into the 4-5 DoE-mandated categories. E.g., a student who reports "white, Asian, Black, and other" can be recorded as "Black" even if that's not the identity most salient to them.
Enrollment records show that Stanford had 17,314 students last fall and that 3,406 were American citizens or permanent residents who were classified in the university’s “underrepresented minority” category. Another 4,431 were international students.
