90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

This is not a picture of a democratic election. It's a "free but unfair" election, on a playing field systematically tilted towards a wealthy ultraminority. This one campaign saw about as much spending as the entire '24 UK general election. Money in politics is an existential threat to democracy.

At the human level, the World Cup is beautiful snackstack.net/2026/06/29/t...
Have you seen the photos and videos of Lawrence, Kansas welcoming the Algerian World Cup team and its fans? I should have known that a Midwest college town could step up like that but, well, I didn't. There's the old Kansas guy who made an Algerian flag the size of a field. The University of Kansas marching band showing up at training sessions to play the Algerian national anthem. The partying when Algeria beat Jordan in their second game. The mayor trying harissa. The chamber of commerce (!). posting wild scenes from a watch party in a blocked-off street. The random Kansans yelling "inshallah Algeria wins tonight” or wearing Riyad Mahrez jerseys and tearing up while they talk about their pride in hosting this team.“We’re so happy they came here to be part of this community,” the mustachioed man in that last video says. I want to print that up and put it in every classroom and public space as an aspirational, neighborly ethos to replace the Pledge of Allegiance.

That UK media are near universally suggesting bond markets have a veto over who becomes Chancellor is nuts. Bond markets do not have this kind of power. A misreading of Liz Truss’s fall has completely buried the basic lessons of Keynesianism, to say nothing of COVID/the GFC.

Jobs are capacities in a material sense as well as costs in a payroll sense. Public banking can be a tool to begin to correct this omission. Imagine a co-op getting access to credit because its maintained employment is listed on its balance sheet as an asset rather than a payroll liability.

These proposals are good on their merits. But the idea that the UK govt has a fixed pot of £ that’s run dry is in a fundamental way pre-Keynesian, 1920s economics. The kind that would’ve rejected building the NHS in 1948- because Britain was broke. If a Burnham govt embraces it, there’s no point.
