Call for contributions for an edited volume on Gender and Elections in Europe (from us @cerifowler.bsky.social @jess-smith.bsky.social @rosieshorrocks.bsky.social). Please submit suggested chapters to genelectnetwork@gmail.com . Deadline is 30th October!
Gender and Elections in Europe: New Directions in Research

This edited volume aims to set a new research agenda for the study of gender and elections in the UK and Europe. Contributors will be invited to identify emerging research questions, reflect on conceptual and methodological developments, and consider how the study of gender and elections can respond to changing political contexts. The volume is intended to create space for the kinds of broader reflection that journal articles rarely accommodate, but which are essential for shaping the field's future direction. Chapters need not take the form of full empirical papers; the volume will also accommodate more theoretical or reflective pieces, case studies of individual countries or elections, and methods-focused contributions.

The field has expanded rapidly in recent years, particularly beyond the United States, yet no dedicated edited collection has focused specifically on gender and elections in the UK and Europe. This volume addresses that gap by bringing together scholars to reflect on the current state of the field and to identify the most important questions, approaches, and challenges for future research. The volume seeks contributions from researchers who use both qualitative and/or quantitative approaches to study any aspect of gender and elections.

This project is especially timely. Across Europe, women's presence in electoral politics has grown, but this progress has unfolded alongside persistent inequalities, new forms of resistance, and broader backlash against gender equality. At the same time, scholars are developing new methods, data, and theoretical perspectives for studying gender and elections. This volume offers contributors an opportunity not only to assess what has been learned so far, but also to consider where the field should go next.

Chapters can be co-authored or single authored. We are happy to help develop ideas for chapters with contributors after the initial submission.

Super excited to see the second article from my dissertation published in @politicsgenderj.bsky.social Drawing on unique Norwegian data, I find the green gender gap already exists in early adolescence. Boys are less climate-concerned, less supportive of green policies and less likely to vote green.

Will say that, anecdotally, it felt to me that Goodwin's history of misogynistic comments cut through in Gorton and Denton too. I remember hearing that there was a surprising amount of anti Goodwin content coming from usually non political personal Instagram accounts of young women.

Some vg on the ground reporting of Makerfield, which tended to find Burnham outpolling Labour significantly, and especially with women (as polls, before inaccurate reweighted, showed). Overall, national media had skewed perceptions/expectations. Not realising X is a distorting mirror key to that

Makerfield really looks like a story of the left (Greens, Lib Dems) consolidating behind Labour/Burnham. If he does become PM, the challenge is whether he can do that sufficiently in seats where Reform are less of a threat, and where he isn’t the candidate.

📣 NEW PAPER ALERT! 🚨 "School subject choices in adolescence affect political party support" Just published in @wepsocial.bsky.social with @nspmartin.bsky.social and @rolandkappe.bsky.social. doi.org/10.1080/0140... 🧵👇
Article abstract, which says:

The educational cleavage is restructuring electoral competition in many democracies, yet there has been insufficient attention on how variation in educational content affects this. In order to address this, this article combines English administrative school records with a unique representative panel of adolescents to estimate the within-individual effect of studying different subjects at school on political party preference. This analysis finds that studying arts and humanities subjects leads to greater support for socially liberal parties, whilst studying business and economics increases support for economically right-wing parties. Students who study technical subjects become more likely to support socially conservative and economically right-wing parties. These relationships between particular subjects and party support also persist into adulthood. As such, this article provides new evidence on the importance of subjects taken in secondary school for political socialisation, during the impressionable years of adolescence.
