New WP with brilliant co-author @jacobnyrup.bsky.social! Which governments are most representative? We match the backgrounds of tens of thousands of cabinet ministers to population data in 136 countries (1991-2021) and measure the representation gap on gender, age, education, class and geography.
World map shading each country by the average gap between its cabinet and its population on gender, age, education, class and capital origin, 2001–2021. Gaps are smallest in Scandinavia, followed by North America, Australia, and much of Western Europe. They are largest in Asia and (much of) Africa.

6/ Broadly, gender inequality intersects with wider structures of income inequality to shape political attitudes. The current inequality regime amplifies both inequality between households, and gender inequality within higher-income households - with implications for redistributive coalitions.

5/ Our analyses of ISSP data find little to no gender gap in welfare state support in lower-income households. Yet we find a gender gap in higher-income households. This gap is sensitive to within-couple inequality: large where men's incomes dominate, weak/absent where women contribute 1/2 or more.

David Attewell @davidattewell6.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
3/ Our LIS data analyses confirm that women’s income relative to male partners is highest at the bottom of the income distribution and lowest at the top. A woman with a partner at the median of men's income has a ~19% higher share of household income than one with a partner at the 95th pctile.

2/ Feminist scholarship argues income inequality within the household shapes power (who cares/cleans? whose career is prioritized?) But the structure of gender inequality varies between rich and poor households, and over time as we've moved from the postwar single-earner model to PikettyWorld

1/ Happy to see @kaitlin-alper.bsky.social, myself, & Andreas Jozwiak's paper out @ejprjournal.bsky.social It's well-known that, on average, women support redistribution more than men. We find that the gender gap is conditional on household income & inequality within couples. tinyurl.com/3nrn53ej

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

This is not a picture of a democratic election. It's a "free but unfair" election, on a playing field systematically tilted towards a wealthy ultraminority. This one campaign saw about as much spending as the entire '24 UK general election. Money in politics is an existential threat to democracy.

Ok, strategic and normative critique. Strategically, the data seems clear that Greens win from progressives disappointed with Labour. Normatively, seems normal for an opposition party to critique the govt (both to represent its voters views and try to shift policy in its direction)? What’s unusual?

The 2023 Build Public Renewables Act that Zohran was a supporter of was meant to do was meant to do just that. Unfortunately Gov. Hochul has been doing her best to stymie the speed and magnitude of the buildout (and other climate legislation) as much as she can.

Series of panels showing trends in the link between partisanship and feelings about a given group as estimated from a series of simple linear regressions.

At the human level, the World Cup is beautiful snackstack.net/2026/06/29/t...
Have you seen the photos and videos of Lawrence, Kansas welcoming the Algerian World Cup team and its fans? I should have known that a Midwest college town could step up like that but, well, I didn't. There's the old Kansas guy who made an Algerian flag the size of a field. The University of Kansas marching band showing up at training sessions to play the Algerian national anthem. The partying when Algeria beat Jordan in their second game. The mayor trying harissa. The chamber of commerce (!). posting wild scenes from a watch party in a blocked-off street. The random Kansans yelling "inshallah Algeria wins tonight” or wearing Riyad Mahrez jerseys and tearing up while they talk about their pride in hosting this team.“We’re so happy they came here to be part of this community,” the mustachioed man in that last video says. I want to print that up and put it in every classroom and public space as an aspirational, neighborly ethos to replace the Pledge of Allegiance.

Why knowing who is likely to vote for a party doesn’t explain a party’s success

Respectfully, we’re in a golden era of academic data collection on income/wealth inequality and detailed expert proposals for both wealth and corporate taxation and inflation control. Too many people write this off as ‘slopulism’ as if Piketty/Zucman/Saez/Mazzucato/Isabella Weber didn’t exist.

Depends on who. The Left had its own incentives to claim Truss' budget was so bad it brought the country to its knees, and, in fairness, that's how it was narrated in the press. Easier to understand than 'leveraged pension funds triggered margin calls and the BOE was asleep at the wheel or worse.'

I think you're right that's a big part of the media dynamic. It both offers constant drama (how are bond yields reacting to every policy and budget announcement) and a supposedly "neutral" ground from which journalists can judge politicians (competence and stability, not distributive outcomes).

That UK media are near universally suggesting bond markets have a veto over who becomes Chancellor is nuts. Bond markets do not have this kind of power. A misreading of Liz Truss’s fall has completely buried the basic lessons of Keynesianism, to say nothing of COVID/the GFC.
