You have to wait until the sixth paragraph of this piece before you learn, in the New York Times reporting on the murder of THEIR OWN EMPLOYEE, that the victim was a trans man who had been abused for being trans by the in-laws who murdered him. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/28/u...

Not well known or appreciated, but Marx and Engels wanted to put a stop to 19th century American monetary populism. They hated the greenbackers and thought it was all idealism that real workers don’t have time for, unlike Capital Volume 3.

One answer (not the only one) to the false dichotomy between identity politics and class politics is credit. Credit is both recognition/acknowledgment and an institutionally legible claim on social provision. The commodity form is not a “real abstraction” we live under; it’s an interpretation.

What if the identity-based political claims that class-reductionists despise are the seeds of new credit and monetary forms capable of being formalized as the fiscal mandate endowing new public institutions, the likes of which we’ve not seen since Reconstruction.

Tech and its boosters are associated with misanthropic AI and fascism, while gender and “wokeness” are forbidden cultural knowledge. You couldn’t set up the humanities to be more politically popular and compelling if you tried.

Great. But the lane is still WIDE OPEN for Dems who understand queer and trans people aren’t an embarrassing constituency whose rights we reluctantly defend. And that feminist thought, gender studies, art history, etc. are easy to champion. I’ve never seen students so excited for the humanities.

Every Dem differentiating between ICE and the rest of the prison industrial complex: "You see there are innocent people, whose disappearance horrifies us, and guilty people, whose disappearance is fine."

It feels like the “AI has gone rogue” stories floated by the AI companies are a dress rehearsal for how police departments will eventually blame ICE and exculpate themselves

Who works these jobs will also be used as justification for why they aren't worth investing in. This sets up a nasty feedback loop we see in many professions providing services at the municipal level.

A field can be socially indispensable and poorly remunerated because of existing institutional arrangements—social work and education are obvious examples of this. Then, circularly, that low remuneration is cited as evidence that educating people to perform the work is a bad financial investment.

2️⃣ Assess public labor capacities NYS adopts a second statewide program that conducts an annual statewide assessment of (A) the knowledge, skills, and experience of each person in NYS who wants a job but hasn't been able to get one; and (B) a ranked order of the kinds of work they're willing to do.

1️⃣ Assess public needs NYS adopts a statewide program that conducts an annual, systematic assessment of what material resources its residents need to live a dignified daily existence, without regard to whether the current state budget can "afford" it.

Under this new system, NYS wouldn't need to tax the rich first in order to finance full employment; instead, its public bank could rely on its more empirically accurate and much larger valuation of public assets to back its financing of jobs to the no-longer unemployed.

4️⃣ Create a statewide public bank. NYS creates a new, statewide public bank that is authorized specifically to finance the provision of jobs (i.e., salaries + benefits) to those residents whose labor capacities have been assessed and who are willing to work jobs meeting known public needs.

3️⃣ Adopt new definition of public assets NYS adopts a new state-law definition of "public assets," in which the assets of NYS will included the assessed labor capacities of all of its residents who are currently unemployed but able and willing to work in jobs that meet assessed unmet public needs.

Nearly 500K people in NYS are officially unemployed. But what if each of these people could go to a government agency that— • Intakes what kinds of jobs they're willing to do; and • Matches them with a government job that meets a known public need? I think this is possible, if NY takes 4 steps. 🧵

Receivership is usually narrated as a failure inside the distressed entity. The hospital, utility, transit, etc, has become insolvent and therefore must be degraded so that it can once again satisfy outside finance. What if the failure is instead in the financial architecture itself? What then?

I think the midterms will be great news overall, but the Democratic Party will get bigger and stranger with such a weakened GOP. What will we do when the far right starts promoting "America First" Democrats? It will reorganize today's "left vs. moderate" antagonism around who sees it happening.

The dominant accounting method makes a great deal of sense for private actors motivated by profit: • It internalizes the incentive to reduce one's "liabilities" and to maximize the hoarding of one's "assets" in order to maximize the "equity" of its owners; and • It *externalizes* public needs.

The idea that adulthood as a state of independence is one reason we think of education but not employment as a right. Dependency doesn't stop, it just get recoded as independence for some and parasitism for others.

Jobs are capacities, not just costs. The fact that private banks hold reserves as a special kind of central bank asset to match deposits as their liabilities makes me think maybe some other asset layer should be created so that e.g. payroll is not one-sidedly represented as a liability.
