Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? My new (first 😱) paper explores why green parties remain uniquely challenged in economic crisis & that the mechanism is not only about sociotropic concerns, but also voters’ pocketbooks 🧵 doi.org/10.1017/S147...

A new paper by Lipps et al. shows that "gender gaps in employment, working hours, and occupational attainment have narrowed [...]. Most importantly, young women have made up considerable ground in total labor income: the gender gap has more than halved between the 1965 and 1995 birth cohorts".

A lot of European countries have seen the far-right winning in recent elections. Yet, the Swiss far-right SVP has just suffered its third consecutive direct democratic loss today: Its "neutrality-initiative" got massively rejected with only 29% yes votes.

Some Swiss direct democracy voting days have the world watching, with all eyes on the nationwide ballots. Remember the 10M population cap in June? Today, both national ballots will be rejected. So many zoom in on the cantonal level: Geneva, for example, is voting on free contraception for all

This Sunday, Die Linke could become Berlin’s strongest party for the first time. Importantly, its success in urban centers reflects a broader sociostructural transformation: from a party rooted in the support of production workers to one drawing disproportionate support from the new middle class.

Why is Die Linke struggling in Saxony-Anhalt while gaining ground in Berlin? Since the 2010s, its base has been shifting away from its traditional East German, working-class roots towards a younger, urban electorate, with growing support among more educated new middle-class voters.
