Frustrated with the slow progress on CAHSR? Apparently the California legislature isn't, given all bills to speed up progress died this year. Why isn't California's signature infrastructure project a priority? calmatters.org/politics/202...

California’s high-speed rail authority made a legislative wishlist. It mostly stalled out
California’s bullet train agency said timely construction of the rail line depended on these reforms. They mostly failed.

This stuck out to me on my last trip to Busan: a fantastically illustrated 1962 poster from the South Korean central fisheries experiment station asking ordinary fishers to send in any tagged horse mackerel, mackerel, or squid specimens they managed to catch.
Poster with illustrations of a tagged mackerel, horse mackerel, and squid.

the NHJ episode of This American Life got me thinking about when I confronted my own parents on why they sent me to my middle school -- an underperforming heavily Black and Brown school an hour from home in LA -- and all I got was a shrug and a "I don't know" www.thisamericanlife.org/898/an-argum...

the 200-mile Seoul-Busan drive would take 16 hours on Chuseok when on normal days would take 4. (with KTX it’s now 2 hours) standstill traffic for 100+ miles. I don’t remember sitting in such traffic but I do remember hearing stories like cooking ramen in the middle of the highway with strangers

Chuseok aka Korean Thanksgiving is next week and I was reminded of the annual migratory freeway traffic heading out of Seoul into the countryside in the 90s. driving from Seoul to Daejeon a 100 miles away would take 10 hours in standstill traffic. KTX high speed rail helped erase such scenery

the lines of what makes a “transplant” will only get blurrier. if a second/third gen Korean American kid with all the affects of a stereotypical transplant moves to Koreatown for its trendiness, is this kid a transplant or just an immigrant rehoming himself in his enclave? give it up

I am going crazy we will never get a consistent answer for what happened to the alcatraz coyote www.sfgate.com/local/articl...
At the time, National Park Service officials were concerned about how the coyote that wound up on Alcatraz could affect its local biodiversity; the Rock hosts some of the largest nesting populations of Brandt’s cormorants and western gulls in the Bay Area. Before they could follow through on plans to remove the animal, however, he was either swept away or left of his own accord.

In this scenario, I wonder if Asia on the whole is poorer. Chiang victorious means US less committed to Japan's reconstruction, no Korean War to encourage early boom, less US need for political old guard. Neither China nor Japan has an economic miracle, Japan ends up underdeveloped neutral.
