11. But the economics are clear, allowing people to continue to suffer without treatment and support is expensive and unconscionable. According to NHS England, not treating ADHD costs the UK economy ~£17 billion in lost tax, benefits, unemployment, health/social care/justice costs

Can confirm drivers still haven’t figured out that repeatedly overtaking a cyclist averaging 15mph in an urban environment is fruitless as they will catch you up at the next set of traffic lights every time.

100 years ago today: A cyclist replies to a motorist's complaint that cyclists don't pay road tax and cycle two or more abreast, holding up drivers. How things have changed.
MOTORISTS AND ROADS
MAY I humbly point out to your correspon-dent, Colin M. G. Ross, that were in existence before motoring commenced, and if only cyclists had used them they would probably have lasted for ever? It was the ad-vent of motor-cars that made a tax neces-sary owing to their destructiveness.
With regard to cyclists riding three and four abreast, this is the exception, not the rule; and the practice is usually confined to irresponsible local youths.
Cyclists as a rule never ride more than two abreast and are quite willing to ride single file where the road is narrow, but they cannot fade away for every motor-horn.

Though the Observer article focuses on AI as the culprit, the BoE study is more even-handed and notes that WFH post-pandemic may be equally or more to blame. One impact of that shift is actually an increase in productivity at the expense of employer control.

So ~£1700 annual cost of just owning a car vs ~£300 e-bike So those 797 miles just got about £1.75 *per mile* more expensive in the car.

Last 12 months of vehicle ownership, additional (hidden i.e. not daily) costs: £400 insurance £20 VED £250 maintenance (self serviced - this will be higher for many, and increase per mile) £1000 depreciation (again, increases per mile) eBike: £20 insurance £0 VED £60 maintenance £200 depreciation

A 2008 Smart Fortwo in bright yellow.

This is perhaps the smallest 2-seater car sold in the USA that is street legal to at least 65 mph since 2010.

It's small and cute, like a kids' Jeep car scaled up. Or a VW Beetle scaled down.

It's on the beach with water visible. It holds some cargo about the size of a cinder block.

Horrible situation. Hypothetically - what would stop an employer from forcing these contract changes onto an employee (in advance or during the redundancy process - as it seems they can do this unilaterally) and then making them redundant, paying out at new %FTE?

Just a reminder as the new academic year kicks off - the UK government has deliberately, ruthlessly, throttled the recruitment of international students, solely to pander to racists, and the resultant 25%+ fall in numbers can and will only accelerate some universities into bankruptcy.

I’ve read that telegraph article on disability, and I think the author’s real view, under all the other justifications they throw in there, can be neatly summed up by this final paragraph - disabled people are too visible now and some even look happy at times
“If there is a sickness identity, there needs to be a recovery identity - not just one that exists to sell people more products. A chronically "sick" person does what a chronically sick person is supposed to do: they withdraw from regular life, struggle with previously simple tasks, receive support and condolences, and rarely, if ever, get better.”

Imagine an interview panel. Reform has done away with equalities legislation. Anyone who currently has a protected characteristic that may lead to them legitimately being off sick more/longer (e.g. underlying health/disabilities (physical/mental) would be hugely disadvantaged vs "healthy" applicant.

This thread breaks down the latest Reform proposals on welfare and exposes the half-thought-through nature of them. Especially concerning is the disincentive (perceived/otherwise) for businesses to recruit employees that they believe may be more likely to be sick.
