Paddling (canoeing) across Windermere today, into the teeth of a pretty stiff Force 3 wind - lumpy, and just this side of whitecaps - I came across a swimming squirrel, looking very stressed. Not a planned swim, I'm guessing. It was 300m to either shore, so I'm not sure s/he was going to be okay.

The nurdles on our Tyneside coast are back with a vengeance today, both depressing in and of itself but also a clear indication of what will happen periodically over the coming months and years and tides and winds bring some of the many millions of plastic pellets still swirling around in our seas.
Thousands of white nurdles (plastic pellets) strewn across Whitley Bay beach, amidst seaweed and sand. Thousands of white nurdles (plastic pellets) strewn across North Shields Fish Quay beach, amidst seaweed and sand. I'm a massive fan of Ortlieb, and I'm fortunate to own loads of their products, but when they're asking £70 for a simple dry bag rucksack, I'm afraid Decathlon are getting my business. And my £30.

Who's canoeing in his new Hou canoe today? You know who.
Some old guy paddling an open canoe on Windermere, in the English Lake District.

As the saying goes, if you're lucky enough to be canoeing, you're lucky enough.

I've got a lot of time for Kim, and it's great to see a Labour MP who so clearly gets it.. [There's a 'but' coming:] ..but her Labour colleagues who control the budgets that can unlock meaningful change in the uptake and impacts of walking & cycling need to get their metaphorical chequebooks out.

Philippe Janin (Fr., b.1959) : Landscape with Ochre Lands, 2019 Oil on Canvas | 100 × 65 cm Private Collection Further info in the alt text 👇
Janin is celebrated for his vibrant, Provençal-inspired figurative landscapes. In Landscape with Ochre Lands, he captures the quiet strength of the earth using sweeping forms and warm, textured earth tones.

He primarily paints using a palette knife, which adds a dense, spontaneous texture and rich structural physical dimension to his canvases. His work prioritizes passion and instinct over cold intellect, utilizing intense colors to construct a contemplative space where light, memory, and geography harmoniously converge. Reflecting on the essence of this piece, Janin noted: "The land speaks in color, and silence becomes golden."

Not sure it would be wise for any government to take tax policy advice from an individual whose instincts on Brexit have been proven to be terrible. Also, as @richardjmurphy.bsky.social has pointed out, there is remarkably little evidence that wealthy people leave the UK in numbers because of tax.
