Dallas' Neiman Marcus, another victim of cars ruining cities www.cbsnews.com/texas/video/...
Map of Dallas' historical streetcar network,
from The Lost Subways of North America.

Circle around the Neiman Marcus location that gave all streetcar passengers accessFrom The Lost Subways of North America

At the time Bishop Arts was built, there was a natural incentive for this type of development. The old Dallas Railway was a business, and it was in the company's financial interest to encourage as many people as possible to live and work near the stations. With the loose land regulation of the time, this, in turn, meant that businesses tend- ed to cluster near transport hubs. In the case of Bishop Arts, it's why the neighborhood's shopping district is built around the old streetcar station. While neighborhood commercial districts devel- oped around individual lines, major transit hubs became focal points for the metropolis. It's not an accident that Neiman Marcus, Dallas's grand old central department store, sits at Main and Ervay within a five-minute walk of nearly every streetcar

I’ll never survive a Week w/o Driving, because driving a bus is my job, so I took the car out today to solve this accessibility issue near Michigan and Gale, where gravel, soil, trash, and invasive honeysuckle had overtaken the sidewalk. Hopefully this makes someone else’s car free life easier.

It's been wild learning a majority of Americans buy the largest vehicle every time. Gas is 4 bucks a gallon? SUV. Live alone and commute to an office job? SUV or truck. Cramped downtown traffic? SUV. Can't wire an outlet, unclog a sink, pitch a tent, change a tire, or mount a TV? SUV or Jeep.

Americans are crying out for the 24-thousand-dollar, 14-foot-long SUV with heated and ventilated seats and adaptive cruise control and Apple CarPlay and at least 400 miles of range (if it’s electric) and it also signals to everyone around them that they’re rich. Why won’t GM make this?

I think it's bad that kids simply *riding* e-motos are viewed as problematic. What about the high schoolers I see driving trucks and overpowered cars? Or parents in giant SUVs? Both of which are more dangerous. No, no, the kids on e-motos are the real scourge.
Why are dirt bikes being ridden to middle school? How is that allowed?

Amazing how a little rain makes the speeding and narrow sidewalk issues visible and...tangible as in I am now soaking wet after walking my kid to school in what is otherwise just light rain. This is what makes routes to school feel unsafe and walking feel untenable.
Narrow sidewalk and tree lawn as a car speeds by in a 25 mph zone, spraying a large amount of water on the sidewalk occupant, me.Just at the 20 mph to 25 mph school zone transition, cars speed by spraying water onto the sidewalk across a narrow tree lawn on a main street and primary route to school.

Even dogs get victim blamed when drivers kill them. This is absolute ghoul behavior.
A Facebook post about a driver in Auburn hitting and killing a dogWas the dog on a leash. Why was the dog in the road?

I am sorry that this happened. Just a question, was the walker wearing reflective clothing with a flash light while they were walking on the road with the dogs. If they are wearing all black, they are not going to be spotted. But on the flip side, if the driver felt or heard a noise they should have stoppedWas the walker wearing high vis or the usual black, navy blue, or dark Grey?

Did the driver swerve to hit the dog or was it dog not under the owners control? If the dog wasn’t on a leash, then we know who was at fault . As far as I’m aware, Massachusetts has a leash law, and that goes for even walking your dogs in the woods.

Friedman ensured "this bill set the standard of how to use camera technology in a way that actually respects privacy." - rear plate only, no driver - fines to the car - no points on the license (boo) - warning first (meh) - only sent for 11 mph over speed limit (BOO!) - only in school zones (boo)

It's so annoying that everyone is going to associate speeding cameras with Flock for awhile, because speeding cameras are straight up more effective and cheaper than paying cops to do traffic enforcement Here's key points from the video, lightly edited
The cameras only capture rear license plates. There is no camera th at's taking a photo of the driver at all, the fine goes to the car. Just like a parking ticket. There's no points in anyone's license and get this: you only get a fine after the second violation, the first violation is just a warning. And then, you have to be going at least 11 miles an hour over the speed limit. So these are not gotcha tickets. And I am sorry, but if you're going more than 11 miles over the speed limit in a school zone, and you've done it more than once, shame on you, you should be getting a fine, you should be getting that ticket. More importantly for privacy advocates, if there's no violation given, the data is deleted within five days. By law that data has to be deleted. It is not retained. And the revenue from the program goes back into making those streets safer. Not a dime goes into the general budget. So they're not a revenue generating device

>If they fine people for 41 MPH in a 40 zone, it's extreme. There are not many laws with "oopsie exemptions". In Akron, a key route to access bike/hike/dog/soccer park is 35 mph. I am confident that area will be calmed. 36 mph is unsafe and is literally illegal there. It should be fined as such.

Up to class 1 and 2 (20 mph) or maybe class 3 (28mph), ebikes and escooters should be able to coexist on shared trails and protected bike lanes. Beyond that, so many cities are overbuilt that it would probably be better to convert a 2-lane car road into a car lane and a motorcycle lane (e- or not).

Would be very interested in research on predicted outcomes of traffic changes (new lanes, new roads, closing lanes, bike lanes) from engineers compared to actual outcomes. Even vehicle count estimates have semi-black-box seasonality and time-of-day smoothing to approximate "year round" averages.

If, as speculated, this was caused by the driver hitting the accelerator due to human error or medical event, let's be 100% clear: That does not make it "just one of those things." That does not make it "unforeseeable." That does not make it "unpreventable." This is not an acceptable failure mode.

Seattleites are most concerned about traffic safety because we all experience it regularly: narrowly missing getting hit while walking in a crosswalk, seeing people using center turn lanes as their personal speedway, etc. Most people also know someone who has died or been seriously injured:

This is a really effective way of showing how this redesign will have a minor impact on drivers while massively improving safety for anyone walking, biking, or rolling along the Lynnway
Removing one travel lane in each direction from the Lynnway would add roughly one minute to most peak-direction trips and just over two minutes southbound during the morning commute, according to an updated travel analysis by state transportation officials.

Chiarenza said the cost of traffic delay to drivers is calculated based on the assumption that there’s 1.5 people per car on average. He adds that the travel time cost and the fuel cost of being in traffic longer is about $1.7 million.“If you look at 10 years of crash history, we’ve got four fatalities, over 10 serious injuries and hundreds of minor and suspected injuries and property damage only. On average per year, that’s $16 million worth of loss in USDOT’s calculations,” he said. “Using straight metrics from the source, we’re talking about trading up to $1.7 million of delay time to save $16 million in life and limb. I think that’s a pretty good deal.”
