Canada plans to destroy thousands of residential school testimonies. These women are trying to save them
The 38,000 testimonies are the largest body of evidence about children’s experiences in these institutions. Journalist Connie Walker and lawyer Kimberly Murray say losing it would mean losing history — both painful and illuminating

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

I'm slowly working my way through X-Men: The Animated Series so I can go into X-Men '97 with fresh memories, and it's mostly good, but you still sometimes get things like this. They don't really detract from the show too much, but it is funny to see a mistake from almost 30 years ago still there.
A screen of X-Men: The Animated Series, season 3, episode 5, approximately 16 minutes into the episode.

It shows Wolverine breaking free from some... ice? crystals? some sort of Shi'ar grenade's effect. But overlaying all that is a large, semi-transparent yellow block with the words, "CUT OUT THESE FRAMES"

The thing about the "a.i. going rogue" stories is that they're just exhibiting behaviour that was in their training data. "They were asked to do a task, and then they ended up hacking all these systems to do it!" Yeah, you included hackathon logs in their training data. Don't act so surprised.

it’s come to my attention that my tumblr post has been crossposted to bluesky, so I’m posting it on my account here #AntiAI #GenAI
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence relies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.
