Also, a lot of voluntary work is done by pensioners: have a look at who's behind the counter in charity shops, for starters. Age UK cites the Annual Population Survey to point out that 1.12m people over pension age were still working in Dec 2024. www.ageuk.org.uk/london/publi...

You absolutely can be "hard-working" if you're relying on the state pension: there are plenty of people still working after pensionable age. And that's not counting grandparents stepping up to look after children, or pensioners caring for their unwell partner etc.

If you're in government watching criminal-led blackshirt thugs in balaclavas wage war on the RNLI and you're hedging your bets because you're not sure who the majority of the country will side with, why do you even want to be in government? Why would you WANT to lead people you think so little of?

The best time for broad based tax rises was autumn 2024. The next best time was autumn 2025. But here we are. The next best time is this budget. The point of political capital is to spend it when you need to. Take the hit now and give yourself a path to a strong political argument in 2028/29.

Excellent framing by @samfr.bsky.social of global developments following the GFC, and a welcome note that "At least some of the pre-2008 gains were illusory and based on the risky speculation that contributed to the crash". The poll's selection of potential 'smoking guns' seems odd for 2024?

I reviewed Sarah Williams' book on Josephine Butler - one of the most extraordinary women in modern British history, who should be *much* better known. It's "both a biography of a remarkable woman and an argument about how to write the history of Victorian Britain". academic.oup.com/ehr/advance-...
"Josephine Butler (1828–1906) was one of the most famous women of her age. She led an international crusade against sex-trafficking and child abuse. She brought prostitutes out of prison and into her home; challenged governments, police chiefs and judges; and spoke of rape and sexually transmitted disease on public platforms. Over a long career, Butler fought for women’s education, argued for female suffrage, served on the Married Women’s Property Committee and supported Home Rule for Ireland. She wrote numerous books, pamphlets and articles, as well as biographies of her husband, her father and the fourteenth-century mystic St Catherine of Siena. Most famously, she led the victorious campaign against the Contagious Diseases Acts (CDAs), which allowed the detention, medical inspection and imprisonment of women suspected of prostitution without trial. Millicent Garrett Fawcett thought that ‘No other woman in history has had such far-reaching influence’, and the suffrage movement carried her name on its banners. Yet she is largely forgotten today; and when the Fawcett Memorial was erected in 2018, her name was not among the fifty-five pioneers inscribed on its plinth."

There’s lots of things I’m reserving judgment on. The tension between a set of no 10 goals - eg council housebuilding - and the ability to deliver them when they’re devolved to half-evolved devolved structures, and their politics, is not something I’m intending to second guess.

Very good on some of the emerging issues affecting some of the software engineering ecosystem. One question: does the FT have a style or policy guide advising writers not to link to the (many) source documents they use to support their arguments? Afaict this article is unusually poor in that respect

<except for viewers in Scotland>. To be fair to @dsquareddigest.bsky.social his final para is perhaps more helpful. Paraphrasing, it amounts to optimising local outcomes, while dialling back the instinct always to blame 'Westminster' for perceived failures.
