The Parthenon is just as sublime as you have heard. Walk through the thick late summer air past the kids on skateboards and the guys strumming guitars, and here is the Temple. Step inside, turn a corner, and WHOOOOOAH, there is the goddess. [Made by Alan LeQuire, after Phidias.]

I've been surprised by what is apparently "news" now, including: 1. "Hollywood film gets some glowing and some negative reviews". 2. "Enthusiastic classicist translator continues multi-year project." Next up: 3. The true religious affiliation of the Pope.

At the weekend, I visited the National Portrait Gallery in DC, and I was moved by the amazing Throne of the Third Heaven, constructed by St James Hampton out of scrap furniture and aluminium foil. I like to imagine that Dolly Parton is now rising on such a Throne, to a glittery State of Eternity.

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

When the Plough people asked me this "Who is the American Homer?" click-bait question, I said I couldn't comment, because the question was a bit of a muddle: who is "great"/"canonical" is different from "who is Homer?". Obviously Homer can't be prose, and the US is far too young to have a Homer.
