I also note that most UK tax evasion is carried out by small businesses (although admittedly our lax approach to cybercrime means that a subset of them may now be becoming big businesses.)

The fact an MP openly supporting terrorism is seen as a non story tells you how desperate they are for the far right to win

The really worrying bit is that they don't have a definite date for the 2027 spending review yet. I could see the argument for a tiding things over budget if you knew the big decisions were in the spending review and were already working on it, but this is just procrastination.

I don't think SV is going to happen, but Labour shouldn't just avoid it because it's a bad system but because there are two viable parties on the right and three on the left. (I'm assuming Restore won't stand a full slate and there's a decent shot they'll disintegrate before 2029.)

Everybody is mocking this because they assume it refers to character deaths, but actually they just had a really dismissive attitude to stuntman safety and didn't bother cutting it out in the edit suite.

I want to go into this in more detail at some point, but yeah I think its notable that £17bn tax cut has annoyed pretty much everyone in the LDs regardless of background. IMO Davey's issue isn't even so much being seen as 'right wing', it's that the scattershot policy announcements feel unserious.

It's an interesting play less because there's any chance of cross-party agreement (neither Reform nor the Tories are going to do anything but oppose) but because engaging the LDs and possibly Greens like this may have an impact on how cohesively progressive bloc voters vote.

It is genuinely quite weird seeing Unite pick up the political agenda of the Lib Dem Orange Book authors. As a policy agenda, it's much closer to Thatcherism than a traditional social democratic agenda, let alone democratic socialism.
A Unite TV monitor calls for “fair tax thresholds” for higher rate UK taxpayers, saying it should be set at £66,000 instead of £50,270

The fact that the Fairford arrest have got bail doesn't necessarily mean that they weren't involved in terrorism, I'd think - it merely suggests that they didn't realise they were.

Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

Wondering if the Nationalist gambit here is just to keep blocking the road long enough for Jamie Bryson to stick his oar in and do something so inflammatory that the Unionists unavoidably look like the bad guys to all observers. There are certainly worse strategies.

Arguably a big difference is that the likes of Milburn have thought through their positions, and thus aren't immune to arguments for compassion or imperfections. Whereas if haven't thought through you just take the posturing hardline surface. A cargo cult where don't know *why* want to be tough.

Others will have their say about this, but I think it’s worth pointing out that this - or laundered versions of it - are accepted wisdom amongst a big chunk of our political and media classes and it is simply bad for society when the elites have little or no understanding of *the systems they run*

A setting that I'm surprised fantasy doesn't strip mine for ideas more often is the late Roman barbaricum. Warlike societies with multiple power centres and ethnic identities; in the social and economic orbit of a troubled empire which they often fight for but have a complicated relationship with.

I have one very basic question about the lesbian bar story that I haven't seen discussed anywhere: how can you drink through an N95? You can't exactly stick a straw under it and even if you did it'd take away the point. Is that why it wasn't making any money?
