Do you know what to do if you feel earthquake shaking? If you live in North America and the ground starts to shake the recommended action is to “drop, cover, and hold on”.

Please appreciate this somewhat dubious artist's impression of the engineer Thomé de Gamond, while diving to prospect the geology of a proposed cross-Channel tunnel, being attacked by eels. (Image: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ai... )
A rather badly drawn sketch showing (a) a rowing boat, (b) two people in the boat, (c) a man submerged below the boat, wearing a belt of inflated pig bladders and being attacked by two large eels.

Hello clever people. Can anyone explain what the white lines are that I see on the Tay? I'm assuming it's something to do with the fact it is tidal and how the Tay interacts with the salt water of the sea? But I'm guessing.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Strong winds are in the forecast today and tomorrow, so take extra care particularly if you're near the coast. Here are some tips for staying #WeatherReady 👇 bit.ly/3VZqfqU
Stay safe at the coast
Stay away from cliff edges especially after rainfall
Stay back from stormy seas - the waves can sweep you off your feet

Working on a new explainer of tidal forces. It is so hard to simplify.
A diagram of tidal forces felt on the surface of the Earth due to the Moon. Each point on the surface is subject to a constantly changing tractive force as the Earth spins.
There are cycles on several frequencies associated with the orbits and positions of Moon, Earth and Sun.
The force due the Moon is shown, (not the Sun) and pulls round the surface towards the nearest point on the Earth to the Moon, and also round the surface towards the furthest point on the Earth from the Moon.

What the water actually does in response to that force depends on the shape of the oceans and how the water is already positioned and moving.

5. After around 30 hours at sea, the dinghy was intercepted by the RNLI and those on board transferred to two lifeboats. Two lifeboat personnel tried to secure the empty dinghy. Thomas yelled abuse and knifed the dinghy to deflate it - with a rescuer still on board.

The two #Equinox are the only days when the Sun rises due East and sets due West, everywhere. At the Dec solstice the sun rises in the S-East. At the June solstice it rises in the N-East. As the days pass between the two, the sunrise position slowly changes passing due East each equinox.🤩 🔭🧪

Life in the ocean is huge and complex, with limiting factors like "is there enough oxygen AND light AND nutrients at this depth?" Not content to measure physics of water, some ambitious folks measure biogeochemistry, with autonomous Argo drifters, that dive down and relay back data by satellite.🌊

The RNLI is the closest you will ever get to actual Batman. When rescue is visibly, viscerally, obviously impossible; when the water is a smothering, thundering black wall and the wind is screaming straight from Hell; when you are absolutely going to die: someone’s hand pulls you out and you don’t.

University of Alaska Fairbanks oceanographers deploy equipment to observe seawater properties such as temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen. The vertical sample bottles collect seawater at various depth to later analyze for chlorophyll, nutrients, and carbonate chemistry.
