Don't believe the Europeans when they say the UK is no longer interesting, a priority etc etc Every senior EU official I've met today in Brussels has spent 20 mins talking about @andyburnham.bsky.social speech. The EU is paying attention and interested - even if it pretends otherwise

Well, that’s not the opening paragraph I expected.
1. Introduction

In the 1988 sci -fi roleplaying game Cyberpunk , the European Currency Unit serves as the global currency (colloquially referred to as “euro dollar”, “ed" or “eddie”) . In the story, the dismantling of US
democracy, a sovereign debt crisis and geopolitical mistakes
trigger the collap se of the United States . The European Economic
Community steps in and uses its well -regulated banking system and
single currency to displace the dollar’s hegemonic role.

Today I learned about the Hagberg falling number from my rye flour dealer. (Every German has one.) The falling here is literal: they let something fall into a heated rye-flour-water mix to see how fast it reaches the bottom.

Good piece from @spignal.bsky.social on why Europe’s populists haven’t demonized China. I think the main reason is that they are too busy demonizing their own governments. Paying attention to (and talking about) foreign countries is a step too far. economist.com/europe/2026/...
