Happy #FluorescenceFriday. The first time I imaged a 🐸 embryo, I didn't realise they had these ciliated cells on the outer surface. So you can imagine how surprised and curious I was! These cilia are similar to those found in the human airway. And yes, this is just a good old confocal + 🔥LUT!

To add to all the lovely videos of non-AI processes multicilia beating: ctenophore multiciliated cells! They can reach up to 1mm long, causing a rainbow light refraction effect with the correct light positioning! Taken by myself at MBL in 2019 embryology. Realtime frame-rate!

I’ve noticed a trend in early career researchers giving talks and not listing their PI/institute. As an audience member, this is confusing as this gives context to their approaches & training. In my team, we do it to recognise we are …a team..(!) and that science is done as a collaborative effort.

Towards a systems-level view of the microtubule cytoskeleton and its functions in physiology and disease
Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Published online: 27 August 2026; doi:10.1038/s41580-026-01011-wMicrotubules are essential components of the cytoskeleton, yet important links between their molecular properties and organismal functions remain unresolved. In this Roadmap, Janke et al. discuss key challenges, emerging opportunities and integrative approaches to connect microtubule regulation with physiology, ageing and disease.

Graphical abstract summarising the impact of defective microtubule motors on axonal transport. Kinesins (green) and dyneins (magenta) maintain balance along the length of the axon. When disease causing mutations cause either hyper or hypo activity, the loss of balance results in axon dieback.

Mechanisms and therapeutic potential of colchicine in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease | Nature Cardiovascular Research
Over the past decade, colchicine has re-emerged as a promising therapeutic candidate for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Here we review evidence from large randomized controlled trials together with advances in mechanistic research that have clarified how colchicine modulates vascular inflammation and plaque stability. Canonically, colchicine disrupts microtubule dynamics and suppresses NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome activation. Beyond these actions, it limits oxidative stress, modulates cytoskeletal cross-talk, attenuates cholesterol crystal formation and reprograms inflammatory and metabolic proteomic networks. Colchicine influences multiple vascular and immune cell types, including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells and platelets, collectively reducing vascular inflammation and promoting plaque stability. Notably, while colchicine has demonstrated benefit in coronary artery disease, several rec
