I harp on this all the time, but there is so much peer reviewed solid evidence that we benefit from small talk with strangers, knowing our neighbours, chatting with our baristas, etc. And I believe that our shift away from that stuff is at the root of all our antisocial behaviour right now.

How to talk to a stranger and make friends
Talking to strangers is good for us, and a growing number of places have started campaigns, events and programs to kickstart those conversations

My husband once put color change bulbs that connect to an app on his phone in all the lamps in our bedroom. He knew I was rewatching American Horror Story from the beginning, so from work during the day he’d randomly turn them all bright red. The first time, I ran straight into a door.

I think ironically, and perhaps a tad optimistically, we are going to go back to seeking out knowledge and experience from our communities and our elders because the internet as it is now has made it near impossible to find real info.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Canadians make fun of democrats for being too status quo but at least there's a growing movement to primary centrists and push the party to the left. The liberals are all powerful thanks to the right wing agenda they're pushing giving them conservative growth at no sacrifice to the base

Alex Karp of Palantir says the AI industry must be nationalized to protect it from lawsuits if it accidentally destroys the world. More likely, he sees the bubble about to burst and he wants to be bought out with our tax dollars before that happens.

these quotes are the DEFENDANTS, describing THEIR OWN CONDUCT as “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions” and the “largest theft of labor in human history” as well as describing their products as “largely substitutive, period” and “will get more and more substitutive as they get better.”
This case is about, as Microsoft’s Director of Applied Science put it, “an astonishing theft
of unprecedented proportions”; SF1437, perhaps the “largest theft of labor in human history.”
SF1652. Defendants repeatedly copied millions of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted articles in their entirety
without permission to produce substitutive commercial AI products. OpenAI’s Head of ChatGPT
wrote that “[p]ublishers” face an “existential threat” from those products, SF1466, which, he said,
“are largely substitutive, period” and “will get more and more substitutive as they get better.”
SF1473-74. Such admissions eviscerate Defendants’ “fair use” defense because substitution is
“copyright’s bête noire.” Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. v. Goldsmith, 598 U.S.
508, 528 (2023). For Defendants to prevail on this defense “would,” the same Microsoft executive
recognized, arguably “make a complete mockery of the idea of ‘fair use.’” SF1450.

Another good rule of thumb: Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. We need not just e.g. the counterexample to an outstanding mathematical conjecture, but also all of the inputs that went into finding it. >>

It seems a neat coincidence that the rhyming words 'soon' and 'noon' have drifted in their reference to time since Old English – sōna originally meant 'right now', but has since extended to the near future, while nōn was the ninth hour of the day (3 PM), but has pulled back to midday.
