It would be egregious if this was misguided cost-cutting, but it's not that at all. The Trump admin is not doing this to cut costs (and they've increased federal gov't costs), they are doing to punish academics & scientists, who they perceive as enemies, and to make more funds available for looting.

When Paramount hires its people, they’re not hiring the best. They’re not hiring you. They’re hiring people that have lots of problems, & they’re bringing those problems with us. They're losing viewers. They're antagonizing subjects. They're botching assignments. And some, I assume, are good people.

US democratic backsliding deepened as the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Appeasement won't work. Fighting back (nonviolently) might. As Hungary shows, winning power in competitive authoritarianism is possible. But you have to really compete. My latest, on SCOTUS, Virginia, and more:

Winning Power in Competitive Authoritarianism
America's Supreme Court and Virginia's state supreme court distorted law to give Republicans unfair electoral advantages, but as Hungary shows, Democrats can still gain power

Democrats doing “scorched earth procedural warfare”—or as @gregsargent.bsky.social has put it elsewhere, “procedural total war”—is the appropriate response to illegitimate Republican power grabs and distortions of law. The alternative is appeasement. Which, as history shows, will not work.

In Louisiana and likely Alabama, actual, cast votes are going to be tossed out as officials speed ahead with new (or previously enjoined) maps. This is such an extreme use case for the Purcell principle that the court ignoring it here signifies that it was always a made-up toy, not law.

The Roberts Court previously treated the “Purcell Principle” (can’t change electoral rules close to an election) as important. But that was in instances doing so advantaged Republicans. Faced with a situation where Republicans want to change rules while voting is already underway, the Court says OK.
