The basic problem in Israel & Palestine is that the Oslo Accords ended with Rabin dead at the hands of the right wing that's dominated Israeli politics since. We could not acknowledge this shift without reengineering our entire regional policy, so we didn't.

Along with what others have said, a lot of it is media bleeding into memory. Specifically media that tended to either urban (where crowds are normalized) or rural (where you have a big empty to roam) settings. Suburbs are neither empty nor crowded, frankly forgettable, & rarely boast writing staff
