A mum comforts her little boy on the bus. He is crying about something. She says, ‘It’s ok. Have a good cry.’ Man nearby: Well done. We’re so bad at letting boys just feel sad.

European seafarers were limited before the invention of clocks to determine latitude. Polynesians used astral navigation centuries earlier to become what Sir Peter Buck called the Vikings of the Sunrise.

There’s a garage near the Wellington Station with a beautiful brown Silver Shadow that comes out driven by a moustachioed gent in brown tweed, and if you happen to walk behind it you can’t hear anything while the subsonics liquefy your peasant innards Rolls are loud in frequencies we can’t hear

So these were taken on my walk to work, from an inner suburb to the city fringe (Karori to Kelburn, for locals). I grew up in the area, and I absolutely would never have seen these birds in people's front yards 30 years ago. Wellington & its people made a choice to bring them back & we succeeded.

#NZpol Saw this excellent quote-reply to Simeon Brown’s latest attack on Labour. Worth sharing.
David Peez @RebelEkonomista

"The truck driver in Pakuranga helps pay off a lawyer's loan." No, Simeon. He doesn't. Not a cent.

When the government lends a student money, it creates the dollars and credits their account. No tradie's tax was collected and posted to a law degree. When the graduate repays, those dollars are deleted, drained back out like tax. They don't land in the truck driver's pocket either.

So nobody foots the bill. The worker and the graduate aren't on opposite sides of a ledger. Setting them against each other is the trick, and it runs on the same myth as "add it to the tab", that the government is a household counting coins. It issues the currency. The real limits are real resources and inflation, not a truck driver's tax bill.

"Someone always pays." Sure. Just never the person you keep pointing at.

bell hooks was right as always, and on top of that, America always uses kids as pawns. Denying kids school lunches to make cruelty the point. Using "kids online safety" as a Trojan Horse for feeding more data to Big Tech and denying resources to kids in the LGBTQ+ community

If children had any political power, instead of being treated like property, we wouldn't be in such a mess. Exhibit A: Attacks on Critical Race Theory started in schools as "parents' rights" and book bans-- within 7 years, this morphed into an anti-DEI purge of adults in workplaces and academia.
