Here's a couple more that wouldn't fit in the post limit of 10. Honestly I'd intended to include this hihi shot originally and just forgot. Plus another kaka in recognition of just how many I saw yesterday!
Tight shot of a kaka clinging to a branch, head side on, looking at the camera.Hihi perched on a vine high in the canopy, glancing back over its shoulder.

Zealandia today. Got some great shots (those tieke and tui ones in particular). *Lots* of kaka around the place. Part of it is spring, but I also think taking the feeders away mean they are more widely distributed across the valley.

A lot of this push to get kids into trades because that's where the jobs are don't seem to notice that the building boom that drives the trades will die with the boomer generation and ai bubble. Raise your kids to be revolutionaries. Raise your kids to overthrow, and rebuild.

New season of Apothecary Diaries kicking off this week. One of the most reliably entertaining (and well-produced) anime out there. Mashup of court drama, mystery comedy, and slooooow burn romance. And Maomao is an extremely compelling protagonist.

Headed to the Leavers' Dinner for this year's graduating class at Vic Law & it's always an absolute pleasure. But as with any student event there is a cast iron rule any faculty in attendance must comply with (& I will be complying with): leave gracefully before the dancefloor is in operation.

If I'm looking at your author website, I'm trying to find out: 1. Are your books related? If so how and what's the reading order? 2. If you're writing a series, is it finished? If not, is there a release date for the next one? 3. Any other release dates, backlist reissues, or works in progress?

This is the logical endpoint of trope tag marketing, tho in a music context. Please serve up what I *think* I want and nothing that will challenge or surprise. (In reality, of course, whether certain tropes are enjoyable is 100% down to execution. Frequently disappointed by things I 'should' like)

So these were taken on my walk to work, from an inner suburb to the city fringe (Karori to Kelburn, for locals). I grew up in the area, and I absolutely would never have seen these birds in people's front yards 30 years ago. Wellington & its people made a choice to bring them back & we succeeded.

Queernormative I think pretty uncomplicatedly means "queerness is not an axis of bigotry". A world where queerness exists just means "plausible worldbuilding". (& I think we do better for a literary scene which has books that centre queer characters in both contexts)

This is a pretty uncomplicated untruth right? It's in Hansard. Audrey Young found the full quote for her column today. Thomas is a lobbyist & former staffer. He knows how to search Hansard. If he genuinely looked for evidence & couldn't find it then he's totally incompetent at his job.

It really doesn't make sense to attribute those job losses to AI-the-technology, because if that were the case we'd be observing AI outputs displacing conventional entertainment products, and they're clearly not. Rather, the impact of AI is that AI-the-business is crowding out other investment.

Wind of Earth, Wind of Tau Ceti, the novel I blurbed (!) is out in December. One of the best things I've read this year; well worth picking up for yourself as a slightly early Christmas present. www.aqueductpress.com/books/978-1-... (There's a 20 page sample if you're curious now)
“A naturalistic, well-observed mosaic novel telling the story of
a space colonist and the lives that intersect with hers, Wind
of Earth, Wind of Tau Ceti is a quietly brilliant book. Through
over a dozen overlapping vignettes from multiple perspectives,
we're given a vivid pointillist picture of the future on a decay-
ing Earth, in a city on the moon, and on a colony orbiting the
titular Tau Ceti. It resembles nothing so much as a lost novel
from the great Maureen McHugh; the sort of ground-level,
matter of fact SF that has been sadly uncommon in recent
years. But McDermott is dealing in far more than pastiche or
tribute here: his spare but evocative prose elevates the narra-
tive above the humdrum atmosphere 'mundane' SF can tend
towards and instead gives us a narrative that foregrounds the
very personal joys and traumas inherent in living a life—the
one hand in hand with the other."

My eyes could not roll harder. a) Soares wrote his doomer book with the Harry Potter fanfic cult guy. b) The comparison is not playing Carlsen or Federer fairly. It's shooting them in the head. Then it doesn't matter how good they are at tennis or chess. www.stuff.co.nz/world-news/3...
“The kill switch sort of works if you know how to use it, and then it only works if the AIs are still only running on the computers you think they’re running on. You’ve also got to be very wary of the AIs sort of playing along while you hand them all the power,” says Soares.

As Soares puts it, debates over exactly how the AI beats humans if it ever becomes a competition between us and them can miss the point. If we make something vastly more intelligent than us, it will simply win.

It’s the same way I can say with certainty that if I played Roger Federer at tennis or Magnus Carlsen at chess, I would lose.

The actual moves they use to beat me are harder to predict, but the outcome is never in question. If we build something smarter than us, it will shape the world, not us.
