I thought I knew the story of the "lost world" off the east coast of Britain, inhabited by Mesolithic people until rising sea waters engulfed it around 8,000 years ago... But I didn't know about the *tsunami*. Holy hell. 1/

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

The bigfin squid was first hauled up in 1883 and not formally described until 1998, 115 years later. A new paper compiling every sighting shows it lives across three oceans and down past 6,000 m, yet it's still known only to genus, identified from grainy deep-sea video. 🦑 🧪 #marinelife

Time Traveler Causes of Death xkcd.com/2976/
A modified XKCD comic titled "TOP CAUSES OF DEATH FOR TIME TRAVELERS BY GEOLOGIC ERA:" features a tall, vertical rectangle representing Earth's timeline from its formation down to the present day. Along the left axis, tick marks indicate time intervals from "EARTH FORMS" at the top down through "4 BILLION YEARS AGO," "3 BILLION YEARS AGO," "2 BILLION YEARS AGO," "1 BILLION YEARS AGO," "500 MILLION YEARS AGO," and ending at "NOW" at the bottom. The vertical column is divided into stacked sections labeling the leading cause of death for each period: beginning at the top with "LAVA," followed by a section for "ASPHYXIATION," a thin band for "METEORS," a large section for "ASPHYXIATION," an even larger block spanning roughly 2.2 billion to 700 million years ago labeled "SLIGHTLY SLOWER ASPHYXIATION," and then smaller bands near the bottom labeled "FREEZING," "STARVING," "EATEN BY FISH," "TRAMPLED," and "EATEN BY MAMMALS." Next to the very bottom sliver representing the present day, an arrow points to the text "HIT BY SUV."

I don't normally subscribe to the "German has a word for it" thing because all languages can invent and borrow new words! That said, I can't stop thinking about "hobbyless" as an insult since I saw it a few days ago, so here you go It promotes a growth mindset!! www.tumblr.com/abbiistabbii...
user abbiistabbii:
The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.

Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.

It is more powerful than "get a life" or the English "You're Sad" because it gets to the central point of the matter, and that is wonderful. Danke, Deutsch.

There's a "is anyone even reading this" sort of honesty you get in the software update release notes from a project that's been around for a long time.
The screenshot of the release notes reads:

A new version of TeX Live Utility is available!
TeX Live Utility 1.55 is now available-you have 1.54. Would you like to download it now?
Release Notes:
Changes Since 1.54
• Fix bug 137, homepage link in Help Book.
• First release in a long time, since I don't use TeX anymore and resent the very idea of paying Apple annually for the privilege of giving away free and open-source software. Also, I'm really lazy. Please accept my apologies for all the annoying issues you've encountered in this mission-critical software.
• Updated mirror list, which was three years out of date.
• Added missing legacy mirrors, which was even more out of date.
• Added an alert on startup when user tries Homebrew's lobotomized MacTex, because those lunatics left timgr but removed its database.
Thanks for nothing, guys. Bug 142 and 144.
• Use a custom user-agent to work around the Anubis bot trap on texlive.info. Can't wait to see what else breaks because of this, thanks to the profusion of degenerate Artificial Insemination fetishists scraping websites to feed their models.
• Lists of countries in Repository/Continent are now sorted. No idea how you people let me get away with that one for the last fifteen years.

Reminds me of this gem of a Douglas Adams quote comparing the BBC’s attitude toward producing a radio play of the HHGttG to Macbeth’s attitude toward murder.
“I think that the BBC's attitude toward the show while it was in production was very similar to that which Macbeth had toward murdering people-initial doubts, followed by cautious enthusiasm and then greater and greater alarm at the sheer scale of the undertaking and still no end in sight.”

CLAUDIA WINKLEMAN [entering the breakfast room]:

Good morning everyone

2
CW:
Today’s mission is the hardest one yet:

3
CW:
Having absolutely *no chill whatsoever*.

4
[Various of the Contestants doing their best ‘disproportionate reaction’ faces]:

Oh my god

Oh my god

5
JADE:
*HAUNTED SIDEYE*

6
AMANDA [shaking head, saying out loud]:
Inappropriately solemn reaction shot

7
[In the car en route to the Mission, spotting a few props set up in the woods];

JESSIE:
OH MI GOOOOD

8

JESSIE:
What is THAAAAT

[unseen contestant responding off-frame]:
It’s some props in a wood

9
ROXY [in the middle of doing a silly task in the sunny countryside]:

WE’VE GOT TO DO AN ESSENTIALLY UNDEMANDING TASK IN THE PLEASANT COUNTRYSIIIDE

10
REECE [crying, being comforted by solemn contestants]:

I’m just feeling sad about the silly parlour game

11
MATTHEW [stern face, hand up in the roundtable like he’s a lawyer striking the killer blow]:

Can I just get some clarification on what you meant by… ‘Good morning’?

12
RACHEL [in the staring-murderously-to-camera bit]

I can’t believe he said “Good morning”
