Talking about getting scared in the past, when I was a teenager I decided to look up in YouTube the cursed video tape that appears in the remake for the movie "The Ring." And I kid you not, the moment the video ended, by pure chance, my phone started ringing. I jumped from my chair so hard XD.

Because it is spooky month, a horror movie take. Imo the Paranormal Activity movies are incredibly boring, because the premise of horror from the point of view of a security camera works better as a game than as a movie. Having some actual urgency while looking at the camera footage makes it scary.

Today is the 64th anniversary of the London premiere of Dr. No, so it’s time for the story of the theft of not one but two portraits of the Duke of Wellington—because Goya’s portrait of him had been nicked from the National Gallery the previous summer, just 19 days after it went on display
Sean Connery in Dr No’s lair, about to go up a short flight of stairs when he spots a portrait of the Duke of Wellington on a stand. The original had been stolen from the National Gallery the previous year, and this was a joke by the Bond production team

Prehistoric fridge! This approximately 4,000-year-old storage vessel once served as a kind of fridge. It was kept in a pit and sealed with a wooden lid, likely to store perishable food. Unfortunately, there weren't any residues left to tell us exactly what was stored inside. 🧵1/2 📷 me
A large, coarse pottery vessel with a rounded body, a wide opening, and a decorative band of regularly spaced perforations around its upper section. The beige surface is cracked and uneven, and the vessel is displayed against a dark background.

In 1888, a graffito was found on a hallway wall in Pompeii. Called CIL 4.5296, this is a love poem, one of the longest and most elaborate surviving graffiti texts in the city. A poem written by a woman, and addressed to another woman ("pupula", my little doll or darling)
Graffito CIL 4.5296
Regio IX. Pompeii. interpretation of Mau, Augustus; Zangmeister, Karl Friedrich, eds. (1909)

“O utinam liceat collo complexa tenere
braciola et teneris oscula ferre label(l)is
i nunc, ventis tua gaudia, pupula, crede
crede mihi levis est natura virorum
saepe ego cu(m) media vigilare(m) perdita nocte
haec mecum medita(n)s: multos Fortuna quos supstulit alte,
hos modo proiectos subito praecipitesque premit.
sic Venus ut subito coiunxit corpora amantum
dividit lux et se...”

“Oh, if only I could hold your little arms wrapped around my neck
and press kisses to your tender little lips.
Go then, little doll, trust your happiness to the winds.
Believe me, the nature of men is fickle.
Often I would lie awake, lost in the middle of the night,
Thinking to myself: many whom Fortune has lifted up high,
those, suddenly hurled away/abandoned and falling headlong, she then oppresses.
So too, after Venus has unexpectedly joined the bodies of lovers,
daylight divides them and...”

If you are in New York, the MET Cloisters is displaying this huge Be’ena’a (Zapotec) sculpture of Tzinacantecuhtli, the Bat Lord. In Mesoamerican myth, bats were believed to be able to travel both heavenly and earthly realms. This sculpture is on loan from the Museo del Templo Mayor until October 18
Tzinacantecuhtli (Bat Lord). A hybrid being that combines an upright man with a bat’s claws and head, including large ears and a leaf-shaped nose. Here, the figure wears a loincloth, ruff, and necklace of three bells with clappers shaped like bones. Zapotec (Be'ena'a) (800–900)
Part of the collection of Museo del Templo Mayor, Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH), Mexico City. As an European who's experience with the "American Wild West" has been mostly Westerns and themeparks, are there actually historically accurate recreations of 19th century to early 20th century American frontier towns? Or historical towns that have not been touched by the Hollywood aesthetic?

For #AncientSiteSunday the #Hellenistic theatre at Pergamon, #Türkiye, built in the 3rd century BC, alterations were made in the #Roman period. It's one of the steepest known ancient theatres. The capacity was about 10,000 spectators. 📷️ C. Bredfeldt 🏺
A full shot of the ruins of an ancient theatre, located on a hillside.  The theatre's steep tiered seating structure is clearly visible, constructed of light gray stone blocks, weathering evident in various tones. The hillside surrounding the theatre is covered with grass, creating a contrast between the man-made stone structures and the natural landscape. Sections of crumbling stone walls and foundations are scattered throughout the grassy slopes.

A digital drawing heavily based on traditional Polish paper cutting (wycinanka) depicting a kestrel in flight, composed of two halves so that it appears double-headed. The area in its chest is a heart-shaped negative space and small symbols of sun and moon are placed in it. A bright four pointed star is placed between the heads. The negative spaces ("cutouts") in the kestrel are filled with blue, light yellow and bright orange colors that look like some sort of fluid. The background is a pink and gold sky with some clouds, resembling a sunrise.

A barbershop in my neighbourhood has changed owners, and you can tell that it is now a "man's barber, for men" because all the decor and its sign is done in an urban, graffiti style, but without any color; and the barber's pole is also black and white.

The creation of the Catacombs of Paris is as macabre as that place. The Cemetery of the Holy Innocents was the oldest and largest cemetery in Paris, dating back to the 12th century. But in 1774, after centuries of overflowing, the basement walls collapsed under the pressure of all the bones inside.
Engraving depicting the Saints Innocents cemetery in Paris, around the year 1550. The Church of the Holy Innocents, bordering the Rue Saint-Denis, is in the background. The Joachim-du-Bellay square occupies its place nowadays, with its famous Fountain of Innocents.Charnier at the Holy Innocents' Cemetery, with a mural of the Danse Macabre. In the 14th and 15th centuries, citizens built arched structures called charniers or charnel houses along the cemetery walls to relieve overcrowding in mass graves; bones from the graves were excavated and then deposited there.
