There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Something I learned from posting this thread: that across the Atlantic, the term "jab" has been hijacked by MAGA & antivaxxers! Here in the UK it's everyday slang for a vaccination, with (as far as I know) zero snark associated with it, hence the BBC using it so openly in this article.

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Doggerland must have seemed like a paradise compared to the starker uplands: food from the coast, food from rivers, deer, wild boar, berries, birds, otters, beavers... Sure, the sea seemed to be creeping inland a bit more ever year, but hey - let future folk sort it out! 9/
Two maps side by side showing the proposed changes in the shape of Doggerland as the sea levels rose - on the right, after the sea had come in, it's reduced the vast plains of Doggerland to a few scattered islands out in what's now the North Sea.

An ancient and magical amber bear 🐻 ✨ Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø in Denmark from a submerged Mesolithic settlement under the North Sea. National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small and ancient figurine of an amber bear carved some 10,000 years ago during the Danish Mesolithic period. The museum lighting makes the amber glow translucent orange against a dark display case background. The bear is displayed on a small metal stand viewed in profile facing right. The ears, muzzle, and mouth are defined. The neck has a polished groove suggesting it was once suspended on a cord. The characteristic shoulder hump of a brown bear is clearly defined. There are some finely incised horizontal lines along the belly. The legs are incomplete. Length 6.5cm. Amber has many properties which may have been associated with 'magic' for ancient peoples. For example, when rubbed against fur, amber produces static electricity which can give off sparks in the dark, make hair stand on end, and attract small things towards it.
The bear was found in 1991 on a west coast beach of the Danish North Sea island of Fanø. It is one of a small number of amber animal figurines from the Baltic Sea region which have been assigned to the Mesolithic period by means of a typo-chronological approach and /or other contextual information.

Because this is already semi-deranged, a further ludicrous analogy: What if the e-m spectrum is like dial-up, & beyond a certain point every civilization switches to dark energy/matter "broadband", and we just haven't got there yet? Somebody who understands real science needs to stop me here.

Maybe idiotic idea about the Fermi paradox: 1) What if advanced civilizations communicate using the 95% of the universe that's made of dark matter & dark energy, neither of which we have yet detected except indirectly? And... 2) ...we're also far too young to have been e/m-detected by them yet?

This is beautifully said & incredibly important. Meeting people where they are with the very, very specific problems they face every day, especially the "small stuff" (which never is small, when summed up), and offering concrete action on them, should be politics at least as much as everything else.
