“how do we win back trump voters in 2026” we don’t. we create an environment where admitting to voting for trump is so socially embarrassing as to render them completely inert. you don’t “win back” trump voters. you demoralize them into staying home. you make it a dunce cap

you have to do good policy because it's the right thing to do, and then you have to find a way to sell it* to the public because democracy and accountability are important, but you can't go chasing the public. *or, frankly, to do it without them noticing.

You're not going to build a durable progressive coalition from guys like this, but they're the exact types of voters who Democrats claim they want to win in '26 and '28 — but when you bring AI $ into it, it turns out that effort only extends to doing things like discarding trans kids and immigrants.

Our form of government must be completely reformed. With an imperial presidency, a deeply anti-democratic legislative body largely captured by corporate interests, and a roguish Supreme Court almost entirely insulated from democratic influence, there is no serious way forward.

One of the reasons AI discourse is particularly fraught is that it is pretty useful business SaaS that is also being sold as a consumer good, and forced upon consumers who do not want it, by people who are desperate to be remembered as the next Steve Jobs and have no better ideas

many US journos conceptualize this about how "tough" the interview is when they should be thinking about how "fair" the interview is. Being tough on someone telling the truth by confronting them with hostile framing isn't fair and neither is letting someone tell lies without confronting them

I’d reiterate that the key incident that drove the Cancel Culture panic - a wholly elite project, imposed from the top down - was the sight of Harvey Weinstein being dragged sobbing from court to jail, unprotected by his wealth, and the internet-based movement for justice that went with it.

I do think a big part of the “working class man” narrative IS that the working class doesn’t actually look like blue collar white men. It looks like immigrant nurse aids in nursing homes and bookkeepers like my grandma and every other area dominated by women, often women of color.

For the 250th, here is my favorite bit of Americana, the poem The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus.
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

I will also say that “you can’t root for the USMNT because of the US Government” reeks of consumer mindset, where consuming something means you approve of all the things possibly related to it and I would hope people who insist there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism would know better.

Comic panel of Donald Duck and a wide-eyed young Mickey Mouse. Donald's speech bubble: "Democrats should do a huge middle class tax cut to address affordability." Mickey's speech bubble: "Fool that you are, for you treat taxation as a burden rather than the means by which our burdens are eased. Behold a civilization rich in private wealth yet starved of public provision, where every man owns what his grandfathers could not imagine and yet trembles at the thought of how he will weather an illness or loss of livelihood. Will you fight for an affirmative vision of broad contribution and universal benefit? Or will you perish like a dog?"

There is an abundance of everything available to every human being on earth except for one single thing.
A big part of why the elite media and politicians have been railing against the supposed power of the purple haired baristas with their frivolous concerns and moralistic hectoring for years now is the older people’s struggle to reconcile the fact that the lefty students protesting against war and ICE and for trans rights and so on have something that they will never have again which is youth. There is an abundance of everything available to every human being on earth except for one single thing. And running out of it can drive a person insane. To be fair it's driving me insane too but it is pushing my soul in the opposite direction. Life is supposed to be beautiful and everyone should get to live it without a gun metaphorical or literal pointed at their heads every second of every day.
Do you suppose that gluttonous self interest above all is a kind of serenity or does it more closely resemble the torment of the damned? Not only dwelling in isolation from God and humanity but doing so by choice. A self-imposed exile.
