For bacteria, they do pearl! Not for genome segregation because they have proteins to do it more accurately (one copy vs 1000s in mitos). But they do however make long tubes and let those pearl for substrate sensing, vesicle generation, and other similar processes 📿 some refs in the discussion

Thank you!! And good questions! It actually doesn't need ER contact, it can happen spontaneously, but the ER triggers it physiologically. We think of it as the cell's strategy to control an otherwise spontaneous process.

Pearling provides a unifying mechanism for nucleoid dynamic maintenance: triggered by a local ER-Ca influx which propagates across interconnected mitochondria, modulated by cristae integrity, and facilitates subsequent fission. Defective pearling causes pathological nucleoid aggregation. [5/6]

We found that physiological and reversible pearling acts simultaneously as a nucleoid spacing ruler and disaggregation mechanism, elegantly establishing the fundamental distribution of #mtDNA nucleoids. [4/6]

The answer: Pearling! A frequent and reversible biophysical shape transformation that turns tubular mitochondria into a "beads-on-a-string" morphology, first sketched by Margaret Reed Lewis a century ago and overlooked since. [3/6]
