It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

Labour's (and indeed many "independent commentators") inability to trace the roots of our current situation to past actions means we are doomed to keep repeating those foolish actions.

The hard truth is we have implemented every centre-right nostrum, from slashing local government through conditionality of benefits to junking resilience measures for society and the economy - and as many predicted, it all turns out to be very costly in the long run.

Healy on ITV just now saying we have a system which asks "how much are you entitled to" and that's absolutely not true, the welfare system in the UK has loads of conditionality to look for and find work, it's so weird Labour keep pretending otherwise

If this was *any* other community, people would be demanding to know what they are doing about their extremists & holding then responsible by association. In Britain, they are listened to & told their concerns are genuine, whilst the majority congratulate themselves on how civil and kind they are.

Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

There’s a basic dishonesty amongst UK economists where they pretend that their flawed cost/benefit analyses have not been fundamental to a culture of “this is inefficient, therefore just cut it.”

One way to look at this is you only get young people into the system if employers are hiring. So either we need growth, or we need to make retirement more attractive.

Fairly flat labour market data but two underpinning & linked challenges. First, job growth esp in sector like retail & hospitality (down 150k in a year) is struggling. International uncertainty won't help. Second, 1m young people are NEET and we need to do more than we are to help them.
